STATE PODIATRY NEWS
OH Senate Passes Bill Entering OH Into Podiatric Medical Licensing Pact
The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill 354, sponsored by State Senator Kristina Roegner (R-Hudson), which would enter Ohio into the Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact. “Senate Bill 354 improves access to specialized medical care by allowing Ohio to participate in the Interstate Podiatric Medical Licensure Compact," said Senator Roegner. "This measure makes it easier for licensed podiatrists to practice across member states, helping address provider shortages, increasing flexibility for healthcare professionals, and ensuring patients can receive care more efficiently without compromising licensing standards.”
State Senator Kristina Roegner
As a member of the compact, Ohio would create an additional, expedited pathway for qualified professions to obtain licenses in several states. Senate Bill 354 does not alter Ohio’s existing standards or regulatory requirements for podiatric medical licensure. Upon enactment, the compact would establish a coordinated system to ensure disciplinary actions and investigations are communicated between the member states. SB 354 has been sent to the Ohio House for further consideration.

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
NY Podiatrist Discusses Choosing the Best Shoes for Summer
Summer heat calls for more than just a stylish pair of walking or running shoes. As outdoor and travel plans pick up, you need comfort that can handle longer days and unpredictable weather. As the season shifts and outdoor plans pick up, finding the perfect pair of walking shoes is all about comfort, support, and versatility.
Dr. Bruce Pinker
According to Bruce Pinker, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist and foot surgeon, you'll also want to look for walking shoes that offer durability and support. Lightweight, breathable materials that reduce moisture are also key for humid days and mixed weather. Dr. Pinker also says that it is common for people to experience foot pain when they begin to walk outside again in warm weather. "Overuse injuries are common in the spring for those who may have been somewhat inactive in the winter months."

PODIATRISTS IN ACADEMIA
PKUFH Confers Visiting Professorship on CA Podiatrist
Peking University First Hospital (PKUFH), one of China’s most historic academic medical centers, today formally conferred a Visiting Professorship on David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Neurological Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California and Director of the USC Limb Preservation Program.
Dr. David Armstrong
The appointment was presented by PKUFH President Yang Yinmo, MD, a noted hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon, at a multidisciplinary diabetic foot symposium held at the hospital’s Xishiku Street campus in central Beijing. The ceremony followed remarks from Professor Xu Zhangrong, a senior figure in Chinese diabetes care who has been instrumental in advancing diabetic foot programs across the country.

HEALTHCARE NEWS
Spotting a Deadly Melanoma Often Takes a Handheld Device
Lather on the sunscreen this holiday weekend and pay close attention during your skin exam. That brown spot on your leg could look like nothing to worry about, particularly to the naked eye. But early skin cancer, including aggressive melanoma, could be missed with just a visual exam.
Dermatoscope
A new campaign is calling on more doctors, particularly in states like Florida with high rates of skin cancer, to use dermatoscopes for all skin exams. They suggest that patients seek dermatologists who use a dermatoscope, a small, handheld device that visualizes structures beneath the skin’s surface. Experts liken it to using a mammogram to detect breast cancer. The device is not new, but it has only recently been the focus of more training by medical schools and medical associations.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
6 Ways to Cut Denials at Your Practice
Most claim denials are preventable. Master these six strategies to stop revenue leaks, speed up payments, and keep your staff focused on patient care.
3. Improve clinical documentation quality
Insufficient documentation drives a significant portion of denials. Payers reject claims when documentation doesn't adequately support billed services, required documents are missing, or diagnosis codes don't justify medical necessity. The issue often stems from communication gaps between providers and coding staff. A patient may receive a covered service, but an incorrect or incomplete diagnosis code makes the claim appear not medically necessary.
Effective practices hold regular in-services to educate physicians about payer changes and documentation requirements. Using artificial intelligence (AI)-powered coding audits helps identify documentation patterns that trigger denials, allowing practices to correct behaviors before claims go out the door. Consider implementing documentation prompts in your EHR that remind providers to include necessary details. Complete documentation should specify the diagnosis, procedure details, and patient history that justify the services billed.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL ECONOMICS) - PART 1A
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
I received this post from a non-physician. He apparently has his pulse on the insurance market, which provides more on the story, not from the public but from the private part of the insurance market. I urge everyone to read this.
Would you actually be shocked (as he was) that the insurance companies actually hid some of their profits using some accounting scheme and that their profits are much larger than they reported? Would you be shocked that the private insurance segment does not want Medicare for all and is doing what they can behind the scenes to stall this? None of those are surprises.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL ECONOMICS) - PART 1B
From: Vince Marino, DPM
The comment posed by Dr. Kesselman and especially the follow-up by Dr. Ribotsky are spot on. Today’s practitioner should not only read these articles but REALLY UNDERSTAND what is being said and the economics behind it. Medical practice in general is, after all, a business. Without understanding the economics and points discussed by Drs. Kesselman and Ribotsky, today’s young practitioners will have a very difficult time succeeding in the business of podiatric medicine.
