CA DPM Performs Achilles Surgery on Olympic Gold Medalist
Amol Saxena, DPM, MPH was recognized as the surgeon for Jakob Ingebrigtsen in last week’s Track & Field News, as the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist toed the line for his first race after Achilles surgery in the European Championships in Birmingham, England this week. Ingebrigtsen won the 5,000 meters race on August 10 in his 4th straight Gold Medal and has won a record 15 straight European Championships.
Dr. Amol Saxena and Jakob Ingebrigtsen
Ingebrigtsen underwent Achilles surgery in Palo Alto, CA this past February after dealing with the symptoms for over a year and stayed locally for a month so his training could be closely monitored using shockwave and a micro-gravity treadmill. Ingebrigtsen also joined Saxena's high school alma mater Gunn High School's team (Palo Alto, CA) for one of his first runs outside and signed autographs to the joy of over 100 teenagers.

COVID-19-Associated Peripheral Neuropathy: A Case Report
“Resolution of Peripheral Neuropathy Associated with Acute COVID-19 Infection Following Benfotiamine and Methylcobalamin Supplementation: A Case Report,” by Richard H. Mann, DPM and Vanessa Nieves, DPM was published July 31, 2026, in Medical Research Archives, the journal of the European Society of Medicine (Volume 14, Issue 7).
Drs. Richard Mann and Vanessa Nieves
Drs. Mann and Nieves note that the case adds to the developing literature on neurological complications following COVID-19 and supports further investigation of nutritional approaches directed at nerve function and cellular energy metabolism. This report describes a single case. Adequately powered, controlled clinical studies are needed to determine the efficacy of benfotiamine and methylcobalamin in the management of COVID-19-associated peripheral neuropathy.

Sentencing for Sex-abusing OR Podiatrist Postponed After ‘Serious Medical Situation’ Left Him Unconscious
The sentencing for a Portland foot doctor who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing multiple patients was postponed on Friday after he reportedly suffered a serious medical event and was taken to the hospital. Brian Bowen, 52, formerly of Eastside Foot and Ankle, was earlier convicted of first-degree sexual abuse in a bench trial before pleading guilty last month to 10 counts of third-degree sexual abuse and two counts of abuse by fraudulent representation.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Income is Not Taxed by the IRS?
It might feel as if the IRS taxes most of your hard-earned money, but some types of income are non-taxable.
4. How are annuities taxed?
Different types of annuities are subject to different tax treatments. Generally, you pay taxes on annuities only when you start receiving payments or withdrawing funds. For example, earnings from non-qualified annuities are taxed upon withdrawal, while the contributions from after-tax dollars are not taxed.
Annuities are complex, so it's a good idea to seek advice from a trusted professional if you need clarification on your tax exposure.

Lost in Translation: How Language Gaps Undermine Patient Care
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
7. It’s also worth noting that professional interpreters — even if not flawless — are still far better equipped to navigate complex medical conversations than providers relying on broken language skills or making assumptions about a patient’s comprehension. Using trained interpreters is not about perfection; it’s about significantly reducing risk, improving clarity, and honoring a patient’s legal and ethical right to understand their own care.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION)
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
The more I think about Dr. Christina's response to the inquiry of Dr. Tomczak, the more offensive I find it to be. It is the equivalent of Fauci taking the 5th amendment. "I know nothing" was funny on Hogan's Heroes, but not from Dr. Christina or the CPMA or any APMA organization.
Dr. Tomczak asked a very simple question: how many students were accepted to the colleges of podiatric medicine this year? This is not a complex task that an established educator in our profession has asked, as he seeks to assist and offer solutions in the resolution of our current recruitment difficulties.
I personally encountered a similar firewall from Dr. Christina some years ago when I wished to know the membership of the APMA seal of acceptance committee. I, too, was refused that information. A lie can hide the truth but will not change the truth. The refusal to respond to the inquiry of Dr. Tomczak by gaslighting is in fact obfuscation and deceit. Denying the recruitment difficulties does not change the reality. Perhaps I can lend Dr. Christina a calculator for the apparently complex task of answering a simple inquiry.
At some point, we will know the answer. Without facts we cannot resolve any problem effectively. At a minimum, the refusal to respond to the inquiry of Dr. Tomczak is, as they say, bad optics. At worst, it is bad ethics.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (HEALTHCARE NEWS)
From: Lawrence Rubin, DPM
In a recent Podiatric Medical News discussion, a colleague boldly argued that skipping diagnostic tests for discolored toenails is justified because clinical intuition trumps lab work and empirical treatment "works no matter what." Dismissing diagnostic testing as a mere waste of time and money, however, overlooks a fundamental clinical reality: up to half of all dystrophic or discolored nails are driven by non-fungal etiologies—such as nail trauma, psoriasis, lichen planus, or contact dermatitis—rather than true onychomycosis.
Treating every yellow nail as a fungus blindfolded sets up a dangerous precedent of misdiagnosis, exposing patients to the financial burden and potential side-effects of potent systemic or topical antifungals for conditions that require entirely different management. Furthermore, ignoring the necessity of identifying the actual pathogen, such as Trichophyton rubrum, strips away our ability to understand true infection dynamics, track resistance, and properly educate patients on preventing real household contagion.
