RE: The Passing of Lowell Weil, Sr., DPM
Dr. Lowell Scott Weil, Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and internationally acclaimed podiatric surgeon passed away peacefully at his home in Glenview, IL on September 17, one day after his 85th birthday, with his loving wife Nancy, who attended to his every need throughout their 61+ years of marriage, by his side. Born on September 16, 1941, Lowell lived his life in the Chicago area. He graduated from St. John's Military Academy before attending Tulane University and later graduating from the Illinois College of Podiatry in 1964.
Dr. Lowell Weil, Sr.
Lowell was a pioneer in foot and ankle surgery and the entire profession of podiatric surgery. He was a mentor, innovator, and friend to many across the globe. He opened his first medical office in Des Plaines, Illinois in April of 1965, and founded the nationally renowned Weil Foot & Ankle Institute where he practiced in Chicagoland until 2018. As a dedicated academic and teacher, he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery, bringing it to the forefront of peer-reviewed publications, served as residency director at Northlake Community Hospital, and launched one of the first podiatric surgical fellowship programs where he mentored...

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY
League of Women Voters Hosts CA Podiatrist as Guest Speaker
League of Women Voters of Plumas County reports local Plumas District Hospital podiatrist Juan Martinez, DPM was a guest speaker at the group’s monthly meeting August 19. Martinez is a board-certified doctor of podiatric medicine and completed 11 years of study to become a podiatrist.
Dr. Juan Martinez
Dr. Martinez gave a presentation on Podiatry 101, explaining that podiatry is a specialized medical care that diagnoses and treats the area of the human body from the foot to the ankle. Medical services provided are for foot and ankle issues including injuries, chronic conditions, and preventative care. Treatments may include surgery, arch supports, orthotics, wound care, and diabetic foot care. Skin and nail, structural, and joint pain issues are also treated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1A
From: Kazu Suzuki, DPM
In defense of Dr. Jacobs... Why are diabetic foot ulcers hard to heal? Why does the plantar fascia become inflamed and painful? It's because patients walk on them with their inflated body weight. Why are venous leg ulcers hard to heal? Because patients' legs are swollen, partly due to abdominal trunk obesity.
I actively recommend and prescribe GLP-1RA medications for all of my overweight and/or diabetic patients. Many have lost a substantial amount of weight and literally turned their lives around. One of my DM patients lost 200 pounds from a 400-pound body weight over 4 years with GLP1-RA injections. I only see him once a year now, because his foot problems have completely resolved.
GLP-1RA is a medical breakthrough that directly addresses cardiometabolic disease and obesity that plagues this country. It has been proven to reduce ASCVD, kidney failure, liver failure, MALE (Major Adverse Limb Events, such as leg amputation), as well as reducing certain cancer deaths. Major pharmaceutical companies have GLP-related drugs in the pipeline and we will have a dozen drugs to choose from in a few years. You can learn about these medications and provide great service to your patients who may have suffered from obesity all their lives.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL) - PART 1B
From: Eric J. Lullove, DPM
Dr. Udell is right that podiatric physicians belong at the forefront of GLP-1 therapy. We see the diabetic foot, the obese patient with posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, and, increasingly, the GLP-1 patient whose rapid weight loss has thinned the plantar fat pad and cost them muscle. If we are managing the consequences of these drugs, we should be part of the conversation about prescribing them.
I would push the discussion one step further. GLP-1 agonists are peptides, and they are the first peptide class to reach the mainstream, not the last. This year the FDA took several regenerative peptides, including BPC-157 and TB-500, off its Category 2 restricted list, and the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee then recommended six of seven reviewed peptides for the 503A bulks list. None of these are FDA-approved. Formal rule-making is still ahead, and the committee's split votes reflect real scientific disagreement. But the pre-clinical literature on tendon, ligament, and soft tissue repair is substantial, and our profession should be...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
Podiatric medicine lost one of its true founding fathers with the passing of Dr. Lowell Weil Sr. If there is a Mount Rushmore of this profession, his face belongs on it, carved alongside the very few who didn't just practice this specialty but built it from the ground up. As Past President of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and Past President of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, and as founder of the Weil Foot & Ankle Institute, his fingerprints are on nearly every advance our field has seen — all while he found time to serve as team podiatrist for the Chicago Bears.
But what made him extraordinary was never the résumé. It was the man behind it. I still remember, early in my career, running my first seminar while working at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. I had put together what I thought was an ambitious curriculum with a strong slate of speakers — and somehow, word reached Dr. Weil. He couldn't attend, but he took the time to personally write me a note, cheering me on and complimenting me on the program I'd built. He owed me nothing. He barely knew me. And yet that was exactly the kind of mensch he was — a man secure enough in his own towering legacy to spend a few generous minutes lifting up someone just...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B
From: Tilden H Sokoloff, MD, DPM
I just learned about the passing of Lowell Scott Weil Sr. He was a giant of a man and a mensch. Lowell’s impact on our profession started young. He opened the doors of Northlake Hospital in Chicago to train legions of men and women in foot and ankle surgery.
There was this competition between the West Coast and the Midwest to push this profession's surgical skills to the highest level. I was Chairman of the Department of Surgery at CCPM and we did compete. We shared so much of our young lives sitting on the first board of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery. Lowell became President. He created the ACFS into what he knew it could be and became President.
A prolific lecturer, writer, and educator, he developed procedures and technologies and was a master politician for furthering the standards of surgical education. He created deep relationships with the orthopedic community and gained tremendous respect for his skill and knowledge as a physician and surgeon.
Lowell was a legend with all his sports medicine credentials, taking care of major football, baseball teams (White Sox and Bears) and players; U.S. Olympic athletes, too many to list. He was a mensch, a loving husband of Nancy, father of Lowell Jr., and daughter Annie, and a tribe of grandchildren.
Dying during the Ten Days of Repentance between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is popularly associated with being a tzaddik, that is a righteous person; and that you were! Rest in peace my friend. See you when I see you.
