RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS) PART - 1A
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
I lectured at many seminars on the topic of how to decide whether a new diagnostic or therapeutic device is worthy of our hard-earned investment. I would start the lecture with this true story: In the 1950s, at a family dinner, my uncle, a general practitioner, asked my father, who owned a pharmacy, what he knew about a new medical device they were trying to sell him. My uncle, who was not wealthy, said that salespeople are always trying to sell him new office-based instruments. He described the device to my father, who shrugged his shoulders and said he was not aware of it. The device was called the EKG.
Over the years, I have seen many devices being pushed at our podiatry conventions. Some have turned out to be helpful to our patients and big money-makers. Others have turned out to be pieces of junk that end up on the back shelves of our closets. How do we determine if a new diagnostic or therapeutic product will be the next EKG or an unsupported dinosaur destined for the garbage? In spite of positive research that every salesman will use to sell a product, we can only rely on trends, what insurance companies will pay for, and then hope for the best. Don't be shocked if insurance companies cover a product when you first buy it and stop paying for it if new research shows the device to be less than effective. Remember when Medicare paid for shockwave therapy? It was promoted at every convention. Mobile companies would buy them and come to our offices when needed. Then Medicare stopped paying for it, leaving all of these companies hanging.

From: Ben Pearl, DPM
I totally agree with Dr. Jacobs regarding the need for better vetting from conferences when it comes to presenting data, the strictly retrospective with various end points to sway doctors to believe a certain outcome will be the result. I am reminded about that old joke about the difference between an accountant and a statistician. An accountant has to make the numbers balance, no matter what - the statistician makes the numbers say whatever you want the story to be!
Regarding our institutions, I agree that we can do better and we have to do better. We have to stop with this folklore and massaging of numbers. There is no issue with presenting a case series, but it should be put in that framework and presented as such.
I remember being at a regenerative medicine conference recently, and I heard something on the order of there were no failures - everyone got better. When you hear a 100% success rate, run!

Bret is correct. Lowell Weil was a giant of our profession. He will be missed dearly. He not only talked the talk but also walked the walk. I spent my 3rd year of residency training as Lowell’s first 3rd year resident he ever trained at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago. Lowell was very generous with his knowledge and shared every little gem he knew while training me in surgery. I was also very fortunate to observe Lowell at his office treating patients from around the world.
Besides being a world-class surgeon, which was well known and acknowledged by all, Lowell was also a world-class diagnostician. His ability to drill down and figure out what was wrong with his patients and how to fix it appropriately and efficiently is what separated him from us mere mortals. My condolences to his wife Nancy and his entire family and especially Lowell, Jr., who has carried on the valuable work his father started in our profession.

I met Lowell Sr. for the first time when I was an extern at Forkosh Memorial Hospital over 40 years ago. He was one of the dynamic trio which included Steve Smith and Lou Sorto. His reputation preceded him, and after assisting him in surgery during that rotation and being in his company, I knew there was something special about the man, not only as a physician and surgeon, but also as a human being. Years later, when I saw him at conferences, he was always cordial and helpful with advice concerning clinical issues and management. The profession has lost one of its pioneers and his legacy will follow for years and years to come. My sincere condolences go out to Lowell Jr. and his entire family.
Thomas Graziano, DPM, MD, Clifton, NJ
Dr. Lowell Weil, Sr. was two years ahead of me at ICPM. On arriving in Chicago, he was the first to greet me warmly. He was a profound mentor and friend in school and throughout our lives. My heartfelt best wishes go to all his family!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1C
Along with many others, I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of one of my past mentors, Dr. Lowell Weil senior. Needless to say, he was a giant of our modern podiatric profession. I was one of the fortunate individuals who was lucky enough to be chosen by Dr. Weil to be a resident at Northlake Hospital in Chicago. I must say that I owe my past success in podiatric practice of almost 47 years in San Francisco to the training that I received from Dr. Weil. His accomplishments in podiatric surgery and his professionalism are undeniable as well-delineated by others. My sincere condolences to Nancy, Lowell Jr., and all of his family and friends. I know he is resting in peace.
Lesley Wolff, DPM, MS
He was a giant in educating students and sharing his talents with all his colleagues. He elevated podiatric medicine and surgery to what they are today! He will surely forever be missed!

I have always considered myself fortunate to have been chosen in 1973 to become a first-year resident at Northlake Hospital in suburban Chicago. Northlake was an exemplary learning environment, where residents worked extremely hard and learned so very much from an outstanding faculty, of which Lowell Scott Weil, Sr. was a key component. Lowell exhibited the surgical skill and judgment, confidence, and professionalism we needed to propel ourselves and our chosen profession forward once we left the Northlake program.
At the same time, Lowell and his wonderful wife, Nancy showed us the importance of family. With a little bit of effort your family and profession can meld together nicely. Lowell became a lifelong friend and a true mentor, for which I am eternally grateful. My condolences to Nancy and the family. May Lowell rest in peace.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1E
Ever since our first meeting in 1970 when I was a student, Dr. Weil was a professional father figure to me and so many others of my generation. He was a guiding light throughout our careers, lifting us all higher through his incredible technical clarity and immense generosity as a mentor. Distance was never a barrier for him. When I moved to the Middle East, he remained just as available, always ready to help me navigate a difficult case or answer a complex question. I owe so much of my professional success to his guidance and support.
Rest in peace, Lowell. You leave behind generations of grateful podiatrists and healthcare professionals who will miss you.
