PODIATRISTS IN ACADEMIA
CA Podiatrist Ranked No. 1 Worldwide in Diabetic Foot Ulcer Research
The 2026 ScholarGPS rankings place David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Neurological Surgery at the Keck School of Medicine of USC, No. 1 worldwide in diabetic foot ulcers for both lifetime scholarship and the prior five years. In the broader diabetic foot category, he ranks No. 2 worldwide for lifetime scholarship and No. 1 over the prior five years.
Dr. David Armstrong
Armstrong also ranks No. 58 worldwide in surgery, No. 14 in diabetes for lifetime scholarship, No. 21 in surgery and No. 18 in diabetes over the prior five years. Within USC, he ranks No. 1 in both surgery and diabetes in the 2026 lifetime research rankings. The recognition reflects a shared body of limb-preservation research involving the USC SALSA team, trainees, collaborators, patients, and families, with the goal of helping people live more ulcer-free, hospital-free, activity-rich days.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (COMMENTARY)
RE: Time to Heal and Move Forward
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I want to thank everyone for their ideas on podiatric education, signed or anonymous, ad hominem attackers or ad rem thinkers, pro DPM degree retainers or those in favor of an unrestricted license for podiatry, anti-second class citizen feelers or those that feel we are where we need to be in the hierarchy of medicine, whether podiatry is economically sound or we are almost on the soup line.
Regardless of which of the above boxes you check, one thing is undebatable and undeniable; we have to keep podiatry alive until we solve all the accidental arguments that we disagree about and concentrate on the essence of podiatry and answer the question, “Where are we going?” We must keep producing podiatrists and right now we are facing educational economic precariousness. Until we do something to increase enrollment, just keeping schools open must be our priority. I have intentionally been provoking thoughts among our profession to whet our intellectuals and thought leaders as a thought provoker.
That’s the same technique Allen Jacobs used with me in July of 1977 when I was a first year resident. Relationships with mentors often start stormy. I hated his encounters and I had already had my ass kicked by Derek Sanderson. Then I realized I was one of his first swamp reclamation projects. He made me use my brain to solve podiatric problems rather than my...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
RE: The Future of Podiatry (Paul Taylor, DPM)
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
Dr. Taylor poses the question, "Where will podiatry be in 2036?" When I speak with residents, I offer the opinion that they are fortunate. They will be needed, in fact, to offer services of increasing demand in the delivery of healthcare. They will have access to substantial income in practice. The immediate future for current graduates is indeed bright. The United States has an aging population (as in yours truly), exploding diabetes incidence, increasing sports activities, and immigrants with untreated foot pathology and a large incidence of diabetes.
Podiatry, over the next decade, is projected to face a growing workforce shortage alongside a technology-driven transformation of clinical practice, set against ongoing debates about professional scope and declining school applications. The most concrete, evidence-based projections center on supply-and-demand imbalance, frequently discussed in PM News, while the biggest practice changes are likely to come from AI, remote monitoring, and wearable sensing—especially in diabetic foot care.
A change in services offered may occur. While part of the practice of the older generation of podiatrists has been so-called "routine foot care", these services may of necessity,...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING & BILLING)
From: David Secord, DPM
I thought that the take on Anthem deciding—after the horse had left the barn with their approval—to recoup payment upon orthotic reimbursement was a bit off. Rather than alienate the patient and generate less than goodwill here (which is likely to be transmitted throughout your practice area and poison the water), I would think about getting rid of Anthem. Anyone who has run a concierge practice will tell you about the freedoms garnered once rid of the strictures of the insurance yoke on your neck. I was able to operate a concierge practice from 2013-2017, and it was glorious.
It only ended because the cartel violence at the border between the U.S. and México became so pronounced that people were afraid to cross the border, and man cannot survive on "snowbirds alone" in this part of the country. Perhaps, jettisoning predatory insurance plans is a better way to go than driving away established patients by dinging their credit history. Just my take on the situation. I’d love to know what other practitioners would do?
