PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
CA Podiatrist Stresses the Importance of Wearing Breathable Socks
“Breathable socks play an important role in maintaining healthy feet, particularly for people who spend long hours in shoes, exercise regularly, or are prone to excessive sweating,” said Bobby Pourziaee, DPM, Board-Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon and founder of The High Heel Doc.
Dr. Bobby Pourziaee
But Dr. Pourziaee made his recommendation with one warning: Don’t mistake a breathable sock for a sweaty-foot cure-all. To keep your foot relatively dry and decrease your risk for foot irritation, Pourziaee recommends “changing socks after exercising or whenever they become noticeably damp.” For that reason, it’s always a good idea to have multiple pairs of socks available. “For patients with diabetes or sensitive feet,” he continued, “I also pay close attention to seamless construction, appropriate cushioning, and a non-binding cuff that does not create unnecessary pressure.”

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
TX Podiatrist Discusses What to Look for in Shoes That Reduce Fall Risk in Seniors
Wearing the proper supportive footwear is especially essential for older adults, said Chanel J. Perkins, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist based in Texas. “Supportive shoes help maintain balance and alignment, which are necessities in this population since they [seniors] are at a greater fall risk,” she told HuffPost. “They also help decrease pedal muscle fatigue and overall soreness since biomechanical forces are evenly distributed throughout the shoe.”
Dr. Chanel Perkins
Dr. Perkins described the best shoes for older people as ones that are lightweight and breathable to prevent sweaty feet. They should also be well-cushioned, have good traction on the soles to prevent slips and falls, and be easy to get on and off.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION)
RE: It's Not My Opinion
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
Over the past five years (yes, it has been almost that long) since I’ve been submitting posts to Dr. Block’s PM News, I have written almost no pure opinion-based editorials. Maybe some vain attempts at humor a podiatrist would understand best, but I’ve written letters based on such preeminent adult educational theorists as Cyril O. Houle, PhD and Malcolm Knowles, PhD, both from the University of Chicago and Howard Barrows, MD from McMaster University in Canada, then Southern Illinois where he took his Problem-based Learning SEAL team.
Both Houle and Knowles did most of their work at U of C after WWII. Their new college kid students were not normal 13th graders but young adults who had stormed Anzio and Iwo Jima, survived the Bulge and the Philippines. Pre-med club meetings were held on the beaches of Normandy and Guadalcanal. You had to help these new students learn differently than the fraternity-based kids who attended university on dad’s dime. Uncle Sam’s GI Bill sent a brand new, unique breed to college where a good deal of wannabe pledges never came home to be hazed by a frat brother. They had been busy paddling the Axis Powers.
Houle was Knowles' mentor, and together they came up with some simple ideas on how to help these new “adult learners” learn better. Some of their thoughts included a different emotional tone in the classroom, realization that the learner is self-directed. The student didn’t have to be in class but could be working a job and raising a family. There needed to be mutual respect between...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING)
RE: Coding for Bone Biopsy Procedures
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
I have recently received several inquiries regarding the appropriate coding for bone biopsy procedures. As this procedure has become increasingly common in our profession, I would like to share my recommendations for the appropriate coding sequences based on my professional interpretation and understanding.
CPT 20240 (open bone biopsy, superficial) is the standard code for an open incisional biopsy of a metatarsal, since the metatarsals are classified among the superficial/accessible bones. If the sample is obtained percutaneously with a trocar or needle, use CPT 20220 (bone biopsy, trocar or needle, superficial) instead.
The choice hinges on technique, not on the osteomyelitis indication:

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
From: Timothy Byron, DPM
Paul Taylor’s name brought a smile to my face and memories of my time as Chief of the Podiatry Clinic at Fort Polk, Louisiana, where I cared for Army basic recruits in 1972. Those memories reinforce what I have believed throughout my career: podiatric medicine is a strong and essential profession with a promising future. My podiatric medical college was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1912. We have come a long way since then.
I spent 25 years in an Army uniform, serving as a member of the orthopedic staff. Our orthopedic colleagues understood the value of our specialty. When a patient came to them with a foot or ankle problem, their response was often, “Get him into podiatry!” They knew where that patient could receive specialized care. I later served at the VA in affiliation with Vanderbilt University, where our designation was “Physician and Surgeon.” I was hired for my Army experience and expertise in foot surgery, including implant procedures. At Long Beach VA Hospital in California, I taught medical residents and students as a faculty member of the University of California, Irvine. Specialists throughout the hospital knew our clinic and trusted us to care for the patients they referred.
Those professional relationships reflected the important role podiatry played in their patients’ overall health. Whenever I meet students considering a medical career, I encourage them to explore podiatry. It offers a rewarding combination of medicine, surgery, and the opportunity to improve a person’s mobility, comfort, and quality of life. To me, it checks all the boxes for an attractive specialty. After a career spanning military service, teaching, and veterans’ care, my confidence in this profession remains strong. Podiatrists will continue to be needed, and I believe our contributions are more valuable than ever. Thank you for bringing up this topic, Paul.
