EDITOR'S NOTE

Welcome to a New Chapter

In 1994, during the early days of the internet, I launched a free email broadcast for podiatrists as a personal hobby. Over 30 years later, my core mission remains exactly the same: to educate, inform, entertain, and keep the podiatry community updated on the latest news, while providing a forum for intelligent, balanced debate on the issues affecting the profession.

As we transition to a new domain and website on no notice, please excuse any temporary technical issues. Though we have received many messages, our email (bblock@podiatricnews.com) was down for a few hours this weekend. Please resend your message if you haven't received an expected reply.

Please note that we are an independent publication and are no longer affiliated with Podiatry Management, Podiatry Management Online, or Kane Communications, Inc.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Peptides

The New York State Podiatric Medical Association's (NYSPMA) New York Division’s monthly meeting highlighted the growing role of peptides in modern podiatric care. Conducted by Manhattan Division President Laurence D. Landau, DPM, and Corrine Renne, DPM, the event featured a presentation by Michael Felley, DPM.

Dr. Michael Felley

The presentation explored both the science and business of incorporating peptides into podiatric practice, including their potential applications in tissue repair, recovery, and patient care. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many physicians expressing strong interest in learning more and implementing peptide-based services within their own practices.

PODIATRISTS AND THE LAW
IN Podiatrist Pleads Guilty to Sexual Battery After Hung Jury in Rape Trial

An Elkhart podiatrist accused of sexually assaulting a nursing home resident has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, avoiding a new trial following a hung jury in May. Hazim Ibrahim pleaded guilty to a Level 6 felony charge of sexual battery. His two original rape charges were dismissed under the plea agreement. An Elkhart County judge sentenced Ibrahim to 910 days in prison with 455 days of credit, meaning he has already served his required time under the lesser charge.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
RE:  Standard of Care for Post-op Nail Matrixectomies
From: Jeff Pinsky, DPM, Steven Finer, DPM

That the query is from “name withheld” says to me that they know the correct answer. Of course patients' post-op nail matrixectomy should have a follow-up appointment. Most matrixectomies do just fine. For those rare ones that don’t, you’ll kick yourself after the fact if you didn’t follow-up. Malpractice guys eat this stuff up. Patients can be non-compliant, poor healers, get infections, or just need that little bit of hand-holding and re-assurance.

If you’re so busy that there’s not the 3-5 minutes to do a follow-up look-see, you’re not only doing a disservice to your patient, but to yourself.

Jeff Pinsky, DPM (retired), Petersburg, VA

I brought back all nail surgeries a day or two afterwards. First of all, it takes a minute. Secondly, you can check for infection and see if the patient can follow directions. Indirectly, it is good for your practice by showing that you care.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY)
RE: Podiatric Clandestineness
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD

I remember as a child sitting at the dinner table, especially Sundays, when the elders suddenly broke into speaking Polish or Hungarian. My mom was Hungarian and my dad Polish. My sister and I began to discern that the switch to their native tongues signaled trouble of some sort on that respective side of the family. Usually not a felony conviction, but something as terrible as a newlywed pregnancy which some ethnics still believed was by immaculate conception. My sister and I were not allowed to speak Polish or Hungarian at home and none of the family wanted us to learn it because post-WWII, it was suspect to speak anything but English. Secrecy was not a question of patriotism, but a method of keeping something hush-hush. My sister and I were victims of knowledge isolation.

The APMA National Convention starts August 6 and there are answers to a couple of questions many of us would like to know. How many podiatric medical students will begin PMS 1 this year? And what is (are) the real reason(s) ACGME cannot have a “look see” into our three-year residency programs that ostensibly put us on par with the MD/DO graduate education programs?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1A

Dr. Helfand was one of our professors at then PCPM and was a giant of integrating podiatry into the American public health system. His ideas on podiatry becoming a mainstay of public health were way ahead of his time!

I was fortunate to author a chapter in his book on podiatry and public health as he sought my experiences as a military DPM for 23 years. I was also fortunate to work with him as we combined the ABPO and ASPM, developing the ABOPPM, which is now the ABPM. Dr. Helfand had these ideas back in the early 1970s. It was my privilege to be one of his students, then colleagues.

Heartfelt condolences to the Helfand family and friends.

Joe Agostinelli, DPM
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1B

RE: The Passing of Arthur Ervin Helfand, DPM

I am a 1970 graduate of PCPM and a 2-year resident at St. Luke’s Hospital. Art was a huge part of my podiatry education. Not just the learning part but the fact that these opportunities were available to me because of his hard work. Every day, I still benefit from his podiatry philosophy and the opportunity he provided. He will be missed.

Sam Bell, DPM

I was so deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Arthur. My heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time. Reflecting on my journey through podiatry school and residency, I am constantly reminded of how much of a guiding light Arthur was to me. Not only teaching me medicine, he encouraged me to envision and build the future of our profession. His wisdom, mentorship, and vision continue to shape the way I practice and lead every day.

Thank you, Art for everything you gave to your students and to our field. I am holding you in my thoughts and wish you peace and comfort through eternity.

Larry Zonis, DPM

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2

I first met Dr. Kramer when I started as a Federal Services delegate at the APMA HOD in 1985 as our delegation was seated right in front of the Florida delegation and I learned all about how the HOD processes worked. He was a dynamic DPM who helped shepherd through many of the resolutions that have furthered the profession. In later years, it was a pleasure to catch up at the Florida SAM annual meetings, remembering our times at the HOD.

Heartfelt condolences to the Kramer family and friends.

Joe Agostinelli, DPM
