RE: The Passing of Arthur Ervin Helfand, DPM
At 91 years of age, one of the most important icons of podiatric medicine has passed away. Arthur Helfand’s career moved the profession forward in the '60s, '70s, and '80s. He has taught, trained, and influenced thousands of podiatrists, myself included. He is responsible, with other icons of that generation, with advancing podiatric medicine and surgery into the modern age.
His name may not be well known to many of you but we have all benefited from his tireless work for the patients we all serve, and the profession he loved. We all stand upon his shoulders. I have the honor of shepherding his last publication, a book chapter in a major geriatric book, which will be released later this year. I will miss my friend and mentor but take comfort that his was a life well lived.
