PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS - PART 1
NC Podiatrist Talks Foot Health on "I Love My Feet" Day
August 17 is National “I Love My Feet” Day. It’s a day set aside to encourage everyone to show their feet a little love. Tara McElroy, DPM, a podiatric specialist with Novant Health Mothershed Foot and Ankle, explains common foot problems and the one thing you should always request before getting a professional pedicure.
Dr. Tara McElroy
"Pedicurists can do a good job, but there are certain precautions you should take to prevent infections. I tell my patients: 1) you want to tell the pedicurist to cut the nails square or straight across; 2) bring your own nail polish because the one thing you can't sterilize is nail polish, which is often used from one patient to the next," says Dr. McElroy.

Small Consistent Habits Can Help Keep Feet Healthy: MN Podiatrist
According to Paul Langer, DPM, "Small, consistent habits can go a long way toward keeping feet healthy and comfortable. For each of the conditions described above, footwear can contribute to the problem or become part of the treatment. The right shoe is not the same for everyone, but fit is the best starting point: The shoe should match the shape of the foot rather than forcing the foot to match the shape of the shoe."
Dr. Paul Langer
"I often reassure patients that needing supportive footwear for a painful condition does not mean they can never wear stylish shoes. A practical goal is to spend most of the day in shoes that fit well and accommodate the shape of the foot. If you can do that 80 to 90 percent of the time, you’ll generally be much less likely to develop or aggravate foot pain," says Dr. Langer.

PODIATRISTS IN POLITICS
AK Podiatrist Aiming to Be in the Final Four in Gubernatorial Primary
Under Alaska’s election system, the top four vote-getters — regardless of political party — advance to the November general election. That may mean multiple Republicans or Democrats on the same ballot, competing for the same votes. In November, voters in the general election will be asked to rank those four candidates in order of preference.
Dr. Matt Heilala
Matt Heilala, DPM, a podiatrist and Republican who has put more than $1.5 million of his own money into a campaign for governor. "What if there’s an indictment, an October surprise, some kind of a shenanigan that the opposing party is going to play on the person that is 10 votes ahead of me, and they’re just waiting for me to leave?" he asked. In that case, having another Republican would be helpful, Dr. Heilala suggested.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (HEALTHCARE NEWS)
From: Burton Katzen, DPM
I believe the reason for so many negative lab results is that the majority of so-called "white nails", especially if they are not thick, are not fungus in the first place. My belief is that the overwhelming majority of discolored nails are due to the lifting of the nail from the nail bed by minimal ongoing trauma, including a dorsiflexed and/or distally elongated hallux, and the fungus occurs as a secondary infection due to this portal of entry. If I see pink proximally, my feeling is that it is a barrier for the portal of entry of the fungus, that if left untreated, will eventually cause the thickened nails, but the root which would cause permanent damage has not been reached yet.
My treatment: No culture. No antifungals. I clip the lifted portion of the nail back to where it is attached and perform a snap extensor dorsal tenotomy distal to the sheath (no stitches), which relieves the pressure. While in practice, I performed this procedure hundreds of times with amazing results (the majority of patients having had previous failed antifungal treatments) with never a loss of function as long as it is performed distal to the sheath. In all the lectures I have given on numerous surgical subjects over the years, this is the number one follow-up positive procedure response I received. A little unorthodox, sure. Try it. You and your patients will love it.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1A
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
The responses to my statement were not unexpected. They were accurately anticipated. It is one more reason that APMA membership represents fewer and fewer of podiatrists. Dr. Christina may be retired, but he responded to the inquiry of Dr. Tomczak. Again, a simple question: how many students are starting the first year at the colleges this year? Dr. Tomczak did not ask about 2024. Nor did he inquire about 2025. He did not ask about medical or osteopathic colleges. He has asked a very simple question. How many first- year students have started in 2026?
With regard to the secrecy of the highly sought seal of approval committee, I would ask the following. If an individual has achieved the level of trust to award the seal of approval, why can they not be trusted to not be subject to corporate influence? Certainly, these individuals would not “sell” or be bribed or otherwise influenced. After all, you have selected them on the basis of their high ethical standards.
The chairpersons of the APMA scientific sessions (national and regional) are not a secret. Why are you not fearful that corporate influence would result in manipulation of these programs for the purpose of subtly or overtly endorsing their products and services? Or becoming members of speakers’ bureaus or consultants for these corporations? That does not happen, does it! They too are individuals of the highest ethical and scientific standards. What is unusual about the seal of approval committee such that the members cannot be trusted and must be protected?
How many students are first year students as of August 16, 2026?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC MEDICAL EDUCATION) - PART 1B
RE: Remember When? (Alan Sherman, DPM)
From: James DiResta, DPM, MPH
It is interesting to note the comparison between physician assistants (PA) students and podiatric (DPM) students.
PA: Applicants 34,625: Matriculants 13,195, with Matriculation of 38% and an average GPA of 3.69
DPM: Applicants 839: Matriculants 525, with 63% Matriculation and an average GPA of 3.4
Although PA schools are mostly test-optional, DPM schools with an overall MCAT of 493, place the average score at the 25th percentile... well below DO and MD school averages.
