PA Podiatrist Discusses How Aging Affects Feet
Sabrina Minhas, DPM, assistant clinical professor at the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, explained that as we age, the ligaments, tendons, and muscles that support the arches in our feet can weaken, causing the arch to gradually descend. As a result, our feet can become longer and wider, which may require a larger shoe size. Gaining weight later in life or becoming pregnant can also cause arches to lower, Dr. Minhas said. “I tell patients, ‘Don’t get too attached to the shoe you wore when you were 15 years younger,’” she added.
Dr. Sabrina Minhas
As for the pain of walking on flat surfaces, she said, with age, the fat pads under your heel and the ball of your foot tend to diminish and are less effective at cushioning the bones. “My older patients have very little fat on their feet, and they will tell me that walking barefoot on a hard floor feels as though they are walking directly on their bones or on pebbles,” Dr. Minhas said. She advises patients to wear slippers or sandals with sturdy foot support at home.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Reasons for Relocation and Downsizing
After more than three decades of caring for patients across the Rockaway peninsula, John Schilling, DPM has entered a new chapter in his career with the relocation of his podiatry practice. “I find myself at an important turning point—one that reflects both the challenges and realities of today’s healthcare environment, as well as a continued commitment to serving my patients with the highest level of care,” Dr. Schilling wrote earlier this year in his Foot Notes column.
Dr. John Schilling
“Over the past several years, the medical field has undergone significant financial and economic changes, particularly in the area of insurance reimbursements and the rising costs of maintaining a medical practice,” Dr. Schilling explained. “After careful reflection and consultation with my accountant, it became clear that downsizing was the most responsible and practical step forward.”

PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
OK Podiatrist Invents Sporastat(R) All-in-One Antifungal Topical Cream
Sporastat was born out of frustration in the treatment room, not a boardroom. David Stoller, DPM, practicing in Tulsa, OK, grew tired of handing patients 3 to 4 separate prescriptions - an antifungal, an antibacterial, and a steroid - just to knock out a single stubborn case of athlete's foot, fungal toenails, or irritated skin conditions.
Dr. David Stoller
Drawing on years of clinical experience treating these conditions daily, Dr. Stoller formulated and patented a single, all-in-one topical cream that combines terbinafine, clotrimazole, Bactroban and hydrocortisone into one broad-spectrum solution - giving patients faster relief with one tube instead of a handful of bottles. What started as a practical fix for his own patients has grown into Sporastat, a product built by a podiatrist, for podiatrists, to simplify care and improve outcomes.

QUERIES (MEDICAL-LEGAL)
Query: What to Do With Charts When Retiring
I am retiring and closing my office and not selling it to another podiatrist. What do I do with all the medical charts?
Name Withheld
Editor's comment: Podiatric Medical News does not provide legal advice. Under state regulations and HIPAA, you remain legally responsible for the security, privacy, and accessibility of your patient records even after you walk away, unless you formally transfer custodianship.
If you retain the records, you must do so for the regulatory period required by your state. You have several options including appointing a professional medical records custodian or digitizing them and securely self-storing them. Seek the advice of a healthcare attorney in your state.

QUERY (NON-CLINICAL)
Query: Alternative to Gordopool Whirlpool Concentrate
I will shortly be coming to the end of my supply of Gordopool whirlpool concentrate. Since Gordon labs is no longer operating, I have yet to find a suitable alternative. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (SCAMS)
RE: Beware of Scam from "Department of Health"
I was scammed tonight and my computer was hacked because I opened an email from the Department of Health with the subject line: "IMPORTANT UPDATES FOR HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONERS". I then clicked on License and Certificate Information, with a blue box that said, “REVIEW DOCUMENT”. A file was then downloaded but I could not open it. I made a note to contact the Department of Health tomorrow because I thought I could not open an important email.
Within a half an hour, I started to get emails and texts from accounts like Best Buy stating a new password was attempted and that Best Buy was unable to process my payment. I quickly deleted the file, shut down the computer, and have been changing my passwords since. Please be careful. The email looked so real; it had the Department of Health logo that I am familiar with every time I renew my license. But the domain was from DepartmentofHealth @....some weird domain name that should have alerted me that it was a scam. So please beware, colleagues.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (WRITING SKILLS)
RE: Titles Matter
From: Timothy Byron, DPM
Let’s put these words and titles on the table and pretend we are back in junior high school English class. Adjectives modify nouns. Therefore, if one writes "podiatric medical school," it is correct. If one writes "podiatry school," it is not. The same goes for related nouns like clinic and student — always use the proper modifying adjective, podiatric.
Next, one cannot be a "diplomatic member" of the ABFAS; they are diplomates of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Obviously, a diplomat is a governmental figure, not a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon.
Lately, I've noticed a distressingly loose use of these terms in professional circles. Don't even get me started on further and farther, or affect and effect. Just Google it, as my 13-year-old grandson would say!
