NJ Podiatrist Discusses Plantar Fasciitis and Running Shoes
Plantar fasciitis is especially rude because it can make the first steps out of bed, the first mile of a run, or even just walking around after sitting for too long feel like your foot has it out for you. This is why finding the best running shoe for plantar fasciitis can make a meaningful difference.
Dr. Adenike Sonaike
A running shoe isn't going to magically cure plantar fasciitis, and if your heel pain is new, worsening, or changing your entire stride, that's when you stop crowdsourcing and talk to a healthcare professional. But the right shoe can still matter. Adenike Sonaike, DPM, a podiatrist and medical director with Baker Street Health in Motion, says stability through the heel and medial arch can help prevent plantar fascia strain, while a higher heel-to-toe drop may help reduce the pull on the Achilles tendon at the heel.

MD Podiatrist Stresses Importance of Inspecting Feet Daily
Mikel Daniels, DPM recommends spending about 20 seconds to quickly inspect your feet before putting on socks. "Check the soles, heels, toes, and spaces between the toes for cracks, blisters, redness, swelling, drainage, or areas that hurt when pressed. A hand mirror works well," he says. The reason for this is to get a baseline of what your feet look like so that you can more easily spot when something is different or new.
Dr. Mikel Daniels
He adds that this is particularly important if you have diabetes because neuropathy can make a small cut or rubbing spot easy to miss. In fact, the CDC recommends that people with diabetes wash and inspect their feet every day.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
9 Workflows Driving Your Claim Denials, Ranked
More than 400 revenue cycle leaders told Inovalon which workflows send their claims back. The ranking reads as a to-do list for whoever owns the front end of the practice.
No. 3. Patient registration and verification
Forty-two percent named patient registration and demographic verification, and 14% called it their single biggest driver. Registration is also the most commonly attacked of these problems: 61% of respondents said they validate patient demographic information as a prevention strategy, more than any other tactic in the survey.
It is the workflow where a small change to the front-desk script pays for itself fastest. Confirm insurance and demographics at every visit rather than at intervals. Capture the card image at each encounter instead of relying on the one already on file.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Income is Not Taxed by the IRS?
It might feel as if the IRS taxes most of your hard-earned money, but some types of income are non-taxable.
6. Are disability benefits taxable?
Disability and worker's compensation payments are generally non-taxable.
  • Supplemental Security Income payments are also tax-exempt.
  • Disability compensation or pension payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs to U.S. Military veterans are tax-free, as well.

FDA Authorizes First-of-Its-Kind Robotic Blood Draw Device
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has authorized the first robotic blood-draw device, addressing the shortage of phlebotomists throughout the nation.
Aletta Robotics Blood Drawing Machine
The Aletta is the first standalone robotic device that can draw blood from a patient’s arm without the intervention of a hands-on operator. The instrument, made by the Dutch medical robotics company Vitestro, uses artificial intelligence, ultrasound, and near-infrared imaging to find veins and insert needles to complete routine blood tests.

Lost in Translation: How Language Gaps Undermine Patient Care
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
8. Language access is not a luxury — it’s a fundamental component of safe, ethical, and patient-centered care.
As healthcare providers, we have both a moral and legal obligation to ensure that our patients understand their diagnoses, treatment plans, and options. Interpreter services may take time, may test our patience, and may not always feel convenient — but the alternative is a system where patients are left confused, vulnerable, and at-risk.
At the heart of medicine is human connection. And without understanding, there can be no connection. We owe it to every patient — regardless of the language they speak — to do better.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (AI)
RE: AI Made My Patient Cry
From: Lawrence Kosova, DPM
Recently, I treated a Turkish patient who has been in the United States for two and a half years. She had grown frustrated visiting doctors who didn't understand her needs due to language barriers. While hiring a medical translator is an option, the out-of-pocket cost is often higher than the visit itself. Because I am in private practice, I couldn’t simply call someone from a hospital pool to come and help out. She came to her appointment with her son, an ER doctor, to translate. However, she did something I had never experienced with a patient before: she used her phone and Google Translate to communicate. I figured, why not? Especially since I had her son there as my safety net.
The appointment went much better than anticipated. She was suffering from an anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) tear and a peroneus brevis tear. While these are interesting injuries for me to treat, they were certainly not fun for...
Editor's note: Dr. Kosova's extended-length letter appears here.
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 1
RE: An Unnecessary License Sanction
From: Richard Willner, DPM
Still another doctor got his license revoked after he did not respond to a letter from his state licensing board.
Apparently, the doctor did not notify the state board of an address change. The change was simply a change of a suite number at the same address. His license was revoked and he was reported to the National Practitioner Data Bank. He did get the license reinstated, but the permanent damage remains and it was unnecessary. A staffer could have made a phone call to the doctor and cleared it all up, but no call was attempted. Let this be a warning to doctors to double-check their contact information with their medical board.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY)
From: Bret Ribotsky, DPM
Are disability benefits taxable? The article is mostly right, but missing a key detail. VA disability comp, SSI, and workers’ comp — yes, tax-free. But “disability benefits” isn’t one bucket.
For employer or private disability insurance (STD/LTD): taxability comes down to how you paid the premium, not the fact that it’s disability income. Paid with after-tax dollars? Benefit’s tax-free. Paid pre-tax — or employer paid it for you? Benefit’s taxable as ordinary income. Split the premium, split the tax.
Also worth flagging: SSDI isn’t automatically tax-free like SSI. It can get taxed once your combined income passes IRS thresholds. Bottom line: it’s the funding structure that decides — check with a tax pro on your specific set-up.
Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM, Ft. Lauderdale, FL
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (MEDICAL-LEGAL) - PART 2
From: Robert Boudreau, DPM
My suggestion: contact your local colleagues. Offer to give, or sell at pennies on the dollar, your medical equipment and instruments, along with your list of patients and their medical records. It’s an all or none offer. Then place an ad in your local newspaper notifying the community of your retirement and where they can access their charts.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
From: Richard L. Bradbury, DPM
It was both sadness and a deep sense of appreciation I felt in learning of Frank Galbraith's passing. His legacy of service to our profession in the state of Kansas ranks him among the best in our history.
Frank served in every office (including President) and many committees for the KPMA, giving of his time to lecture at state meetings, provide opportunities for students and residents, and provide valuable input as a member of the KPMA. As a 3-term (maximum) member of the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts, he helped pave the way for DPMs to serve as full voting members in this multi-specialty Board.
Frank is among the ranks of the legends upon whose shoulders we stand. May he rest in peace, with the confidence that he has made a difference.
Richard L. Bradbury, DPM
