PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS
NY Hiker Injured on Mount Marcy Gets Help from Passing Podiatrist
A Rochester hiker who injured an ankle near the summit of Mount Marcy had some unexpected help in a difficult spot: A passing hiker happened to be a podiatrist. The 50-year-old slipped on a wet rock and heard a crack in their ankle near the summit of New York's highest peak last week, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
Before rescuers arrived, an unidentified passing hiker who was a podiatrist stopped to help and splinted the injured hiker's ankle.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
9 Workflows Driving Your Claim Denials, Ranked
More than 400 revenue cycle leaders told Inovalon which workflows send their claims back. The ranking reads as a to-do list for whoever owns the front end of the practice.
No. 4. Missing or invalid claim data
Thirty-five percent named missing or invalid claim data, and 14% called it their top driver. This is where care setting matters most in the entire survey. Twenty-two percent of post-acute respondents called it their single biggest driver, against 9% of ambulatory and 8% of acute respondents.
If your practice has post-acute exposure, weight this higher than its rank suggests. The standard remedy is customized claim scrubbing, which 43% of respondents overall report using, but only 30% of post-acute organizations, against 53% of hospitals and 52% of ambulatory practices. The setting with the biggest data problem has the least tooling aimed at it.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Income is Not Taxed by the IRS?
It might feel as if the IRS taxes most of your hard-earned money, but some types of income are non-taxable.
7. Municipal bond interest
Government-issued bond interest is mostly tax-exempt, but some municipal bond interest might be taxable at federal and state levels.
For example, U.S. Treasury securities are taxable at the federal level. Corporate bond interest is taxable at both the federal and state levels.

QUERIES (CLINICAL)
Query: Post-COVID Peripheral Neuropathy and Restless Leg Syndrome
Podiatry practices are being inundated with post-COVID side-effects, including peripheral neuropathy and restless leg syndrome. Whether due to the micro-clotting in arterioles, short fiber neuropathy, or from the spike protein, it is real! What therapies are actually helping?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT ENROLLMENT)
RE: Why I Said Yes to a Career Panel — and Why More of Us Should
From: Mikkel Jarman, DPM
Earlier this month, I heard from an associate professor at Arizona State University's School of Life Sciences, inviting me to sit on a career panel for BioBridge, a program that helps first-generation and lower-income students navigate the transition into college. It was an easy yes—I'm an ASU graduate myself. The panel, set for September 21 on the Tempe campus, will bring together people from different life-science careers to talk about how we got where we are and what we'd tell a student just starting out. Many of these students are pre-med. When I sat in those same classrooms years ago, I hadn't even heard of podiatry as a path into medicine. No one handed me a list of options that included it; someone mentioned it to me almost by accident, and that single conversation redirected the whole course of my career. The organizers specifically wanted someone to speak about specialized podiatry, and I wanted to be that accidental conversation for another student—especially at my own alma mater.
I keep coming back to the conversation our profession has been having about our shrinking applicant pipeline. Podiatry school application numbers have declined in recent years, and part of the problem is simple: too few of us are in the room when students are still deciding what medicine could look like for them. We won't fix that with better brochures or a stronger marketing push. We fix it one room at a time, with practicing podiatrists willing to show up and talk honestly with students who haven't made up their minds yet. If your local university runs a program like BioBridge, I'd encourage you to reach out—they were glad to have me, and our profession needs you to be that voice for someone else.

From: Name Withheld 2
I, too, was victimized by the “Department of Health” scam that “Name Withheld” described on Podiatric Medical News. I took my computer to a very reputable Computer/IT store who I have successfully dealt with for years and who specializes in dealing with unfortunate problems of this type. He shared with me that the perpetrator embeds a program in the affected computer, and that while turning the computer off and changing passwords is of some help, the only actual “cure” is to remove and re-install all programs that the “victim” is still using, while leaving all documents intact.
