AT THE COLLEGES
Longtime NYCPM Physiology Professor Retires
Last week, the New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University (NYCPM) celebrated the teaching career of Patricia Wade, PhD, Professor of Physiology, whose storied career goes back over 40 years at NYCPM. Most of New York's practicing podiatrists and hundreds more across the country were taught by her throughout several decades. "Words cannot describe our appreciation of Dr. Wade, her long service to NYCPM, and the impact she has had on the podiatry field today," said Mike Trepal, DPM, Vice President and Dean of NYCPM.
Professor Patricia Wade
In addition to dozens of NYCPM faculty, staff, and students attending Dr. Wade's party, a few retired faculty were in attendance, including Daria Dykyj, PhD (lower extremity anatomy), Judith Binstock, PhD (biochemistry), Robert Bressler, PhD (Past dean for pre-clinical sciences who taught anatomy), and Zev Leifer, PhD (microbiology). Dr. Wade's family was also in attendance.

PODIATRISTS AND POLITICS
AK Podiatrist Has No Regrets about Self-Funding Campaign
Matt Heilala, DPM, spared little expense on his gubernatorial campaign. The Anchorage podiatrist, a Republican first-time candidate, largely self-funded his bid for governor, putting up more than $1 million of his own money. Reached by phone, Dr. Heilala said he had no regrets, and that his campaign spending spree would not affect his quality of life.
Dr. Matt Heilala
“It was a little painful for us to do that. But we did have that money, and money is not meant to be stacked up and laid on. You need to live life and do things — and for me to pinch pennies in a campaign, in my position, would have been like, ‘Well, why am I even doing this?’” he said. “There's no shame, and we're happy with what we contributed.”

PODIATRISTS AND FOOTWEAR
Proper Width Important When Buying Boots: WA Podiatrist
"As we head into the cooler months, we leave our open-toed shoes behind and return to closed-toe sneakers, boots, and casual shoes. It’s not uncommon to see patients in the office a month or two later with foot issues related to their footwear," says Angela Tebaldi, DPM, a podiatric physician with Integrative Foot & Ankle Centers of Washington.
Dr. Angela Tebaldi
There are several key features that you'll want to look for when shopping for fall boots, including a proper fit — that includes length and width. Width is just as important as length when shopping for shoes. "Many people are unknowingly wearing shoes that are too small or too narrow. Shoes that are too narrow or significantly taper toward the toes can contribute to blisters, calluses, corns, neuromas, metatarsalgia, and general foot pain," explains Dr. Tebaldi. "If you have a bunion, tailor’s bunion, or hammertoes, wearing a shoe that is too narrow can make these symptoms worse."

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Building a Birdhouse, Building a Surgeon
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
1. Planning Is Everything
Before I stepped foot into a hardware store, I did what any slightly type-A surgical resident would do: research. I looked up what birds live in my area, what dimensions are best for each species, and what hole size keeps predators out but welcomes the right tenants in. I found blueprints. I drew out designs. I sketched and re-sketched proportions, because not every bird needs the same house and not every patient needs the same procedure.
Planning is Everything
Pre-operatively, we do the same thing. There are often multiple ways to get a patient the foot or ankle they need. Imaging matters. A thorough physical exam matters. Understanding their goals matters. When you gather the right information up-front, certain options naturally rise to the top while others fall away. You don’t just grab wood and start cutting it in the same way that you don’t just book a case and start operating. Preparation narrows chaos into clarity.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM
Query: Problems with Same or Similar
Is there a tool to look up information and have a patient sign an ABN if they received a similar or same brace within five years on the same extremity?
Codinghelpline.com Subscriber
Response from Codinghelpline.com: Each DME MAC has a portal. The portals are very user friendly and have a Same or Similar Search, where you can input the patient's name, NMBI, and DOB. Then you can put in a single or range of HCPCS codes. You should perform this for each DME MAC and download it into the patient's file. If there is a "hit", not only will it tell you the HCPCS code within the AFO family, but also the diagnosis and who dispensed it. You must check all four DME MACs.
This is more than 95% effective, as it gives you the information based on what is in the patient's Common Work File (that is generated by CMS on almost a weekly basis). Hence, if the information was not uploaded or a claim not processed and finalized yet, you may not see that in their file. But that is rare.
Having the patient sign an ABN when the S/S feature comes back with a "hit" or the patient telling you they just received something recently, should cover you for a Patient Responsibility. The DME MAC webpages all have a same or similar button which provides general information on same or similar. But only the portal provides you with information for a specific patient. For more information, visit your DME MAC page for same or similar information, or the DME MAC portal page.
