MA Podiatrist Speaks at Indian Podiatry Association Congress
David B. Alper, DPM, Member of the Board of Trustees at the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), spoke at IPACON, India’s largest congress, dedicated to diabetic foot care and limb salvage. Dr. Alper said, "In just 20 minutes, five diabetes- and vascular disease-related amputations occur in both India and the United States. Within five years, nearly half of these patients may die from related complications. Most importantly, up to 85% of these amputations can be prevented through early detection and timely intervention."
Dr. David Alper (Left) at Indian Podiatry Congress
"I commend President Suri, Dr. Murthy, and the Indian Podiatry Association for promoting early podiatric care. Podiatrists play a crucial role in detecting problems early and ensuring timely referrals. Today, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, and other specialists are working together more closely than ever. This multidisciplinary collaboration is the key to saving limbs and lives. This conference strengthens that shared mission by bringing together experts from India and abroad to exchange knowledge and advance limb-salvage care," said Dr. Alper.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Building a Birdhouse, Building a Surgeon
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
Building a Birdhouse, Building a Surgeon
This past December, I went home for a post-Christmas Christmas—because residency laughs at calendars. I told my dad I wanted to build a birdhouse. Without missing a beat—full Bob-the-Builder energy—he said, “Okay. Plan it. Draw it. Let’s build it.”
Dr. Savannah Santiago's birdhouse from planning to completion
Now that I’m finished with my slightly over-engineered but objectively beautiful birdhouse, I can say it taught me more than I anticipated—about patience, preparation, and the discipline of measuring twice and cutting once. It reminded me of the OR because surgery, like woodworking, isn’t just thinking. It’s doing. It’s tactile and spatial. It’s learning the weight of a drill in your hand and respecting the material in front of you. It’s understanding that small imprecisions compound quickly.

CODING & BILLING Q&As FROM CODINGHELPLINE.COM
Query: Fall Risk Assessment
What findings have to be present to allow a fall risk assessment through Medicare?
Codinghelpline.com Subscriber
Response from Codinghelpline.com: The findings in a fall risk assessment should be comprehensive and not just a statement whether there is a fall risk for the patient. By having the documentation and the proper plan of care, the provider should easily be able to code for an E&M visit. The fall risk assessment should contain the following information:
Falls in past 12 months: 0 / 1 / ≥2
Injury from fall: Yes / No
Feels unsteady walking/standing: Yes / No
Uses assistive device: None / Cane / Walker / Wheelchair / Other
Gait: Normal / Abnormal
Balance: Normal / Impaired
Lower-extremity weakness: Yes / No
Peripheral sensory loss/neuropathy: Yes / No
Foot pain/deformity affecting ambulation: Yes / No
Footwear concern: Yes / No
Fall-risk-increasing medications identified: Yes / No / Not assessed
Overall fall risk: Not increased / Increased
Fall-prevention plan indicated: Yes / No

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (STUDENT ENROLLMENT)
Martin Taubman, DPM
Let’s consider the potential applicants to podiatric medical school. It would be reasonable to believe they would seek as much information about the profession as possible, and in doing so, they are likely to peruse sites like Podiatric Medical News (Dr. Block’s undertaking, which you are now reading). They are likely to find some very positive news and discussions of course. However, they are likely on any given day to find negative views of our profession.
While freedom of speech allows all kinds of written and verbal interactions, one must consider the impact of negative impressions. What is needed is an accurate, objective representation of the profession—its pros and cons. I believe that I have discovered such a source and I suggest that you not only read it, but consider sharing this with prospective students.

RE: What is your age?
From: Maurice Levy, DPM
The question of age was interesting. What amazed me is that younger podiatrists were not reading the news. They, of all people, need to read Podiatric Medical News.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Brian Kiel, DPM
Please do not put idiotic products like Treatmedy bunion splint under the label podiatry products. That designation implies that podiatrists would use this thing. Maybe list it as “biggest waste of money” or “you gotta be kidding me”.
Brian Kiel, DPM, Memphis, TN
Editor's Note: Ironically, our annual April Fools story this year showcased a similar product featuring Dr. Samantha Landau...truth can be stranger than fiction.
