PODIATRIC QUICK POLL
Where do you think you get most of your new patients from?
AT THE COLLEGES
Temple's Shoe Museum Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Pointing to a pair of oversized bright green sneakers worn by the Phillies Phanatic, Andrew Meyr, DPM, a podiatric professor and surgeon at Temple University’s School of Podiatric Medicine, can’t help but smile. “He's the greatest mascot to ever exist,” Meyr said. “I did the math, and he theoretically wears a size 30 shoe.” The Phanatic’s iconic footwear, generously donated by the Philadelphia Phillies, is one of the many eye-catching artifacts inside the aptly named Shoe Museum, which, this year, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Dr. Andrew Meyr
Located in the School of Podiatric Medicine, the museum was created in 1976 as Philadelphia marked the nation’s bicentennial. Since then, the museum has spent five decades preserving the history, science, and culture of footwear. “It’s important that people learn about the foot and ankle, and this exhibit is really about the anatomy and physiology of shoes, where we break down how shoes are made and how they support our health,” said Dr. Meyr, the museum’s curator.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Collect What's Due at the Time of Service
Front-end collections are rising while back-end recovery slides. These moves can get the balance paid while the patient is still there.
4. Recheck coverage at every visit, not just at registration
Coverage is churning harder than it has in years as Medicaid eligibility rules tighten and patients shift onto marketplace plans with deductibles that dwarf what they had before. The patient who owed a $25 co-pay in the spring may owe the full contracted rate today, and nothing in the system will flag it if eligibility was verified once, at intake, in a prior plan year.
Run the check before every visit and route mismatches to a person rather than a queue. The two-minute version catches inactive coverage, plan changes, and secondary payers that would otherwise surface as a denial 45 days out. It also gives the front desk an accurate number to ask for, which is the prerequisite for everything else on this list.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Income is Not Taxed by the IRS?
It might feel as if the IRS taxes most of your hard-earned money, but some types of income are non-taxable.
1B. Financial gifts
However, some other employer-provided benefits and fringe benefits aren't taxable. Examples include employer-provided health insurance, up to $50,000 of group term life insurance provided by your employer, and employer contributions to your health savings account (HSA) if you have one.
Generally, distributions from your HSA for qualified medical expenses are tax-free, while HSA distributions used for other purposes are subject to an additional 20% tax penalty.
If you're 65 or older, you can withdraw HSA funds for non-medical expenses without paying the additional tax penalty. However, ordinary income tax rates still apply to distributions for costs other than qualified medical expenses.

Lost in Translation: How Language Gaps Undermine Patient Care
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
3. There’s also a legal and ethical obligation. Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on national origin, which includes language. This mandates that any organization receiving federal funds must provide meaningful access to services for individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP). Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act reinforces this requirement, specifically addressing language access in healthcare and obligating federally funded providers and insurers to offer qualified interpreters and translated materials for LEP patients.
At the end of the day, if you choose not to use interpreting services for a patient with limited English proficiency, ask yourself this: Are you prepared to stand in front of a judge and justify why you didn’t? Would you feel confident defending your decision to rely on basic high school Spanish for critical medical care?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) - PART 1A
From: Timothy Byron, DPM, MS(Ed)
I have screamed about what others have recognized in the "Golden Retired DPM" being organized through APMA and the state and county societies. Have these retired podiatrists visit every high school on career days. Send them to major universities and junior colleges. Let them get the word out on who we are!
To APMA: This is the time to get organized and get this done ASAP. To state component presidents: get busy, set up a committee, and contact other retired DPMs to engage in professional presentations in schools. We must plant the seeds and nurture them to watch enrollments grow.
I am ready, willing, and able, are you?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (THE FUTURE OF PODIATRY) - PART 1B
From: Norman D Rubin, DPM
I couldn’t agree more with Dr. Katzen. Of all of the suggestions that have been mentioned on this forum, this is the most salient. Below is an article written by Mark Cuban. He discusses the unfairly low surgical reimbursement in today’s medical climate.
Mark Cuban: $25,000 Heart Transplant Surgery Pays Doctor Only $2,200, Too Low. Mark Cuban stated that in a $25,000 heart transplant surgery, the doctor only receives $2,200, which is merely the fee for "removing the heart." He suggested that doctors should be paid $10,000 to ensure they focus on the surgery rather than worrying about the next small issue or the next surgery, criticizing the current incentive system as distorted.
The imbalance in medical cost distribution has drawn attention, and discussions about doctor compensation have intensified, benefiting practitioners advocating for reform, while the existing reimbursement structure is under pressure.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (WOUND CARE)
RE: Addressing Fraud in the Wound Care Industry
From: Paul Kesselman, DPM
On the heels of a recent $20M plus fraud indictment of a podiatrist on the use of Cellular Tissue Products comes another even larger indictment. While not a podiatrist, this wound care specialist has recently been indicted on $94M of wound care fraud. He is accused of using CTP inappropriately on massive numbers of patients when not medically necessary. In today’s Medical Economics, "Addressing Fraud in the Wound Care Industry".
These outrageous amounts are no doubt fueled by greed. The denial backlash has resulted in concern by the overwhelming number of honest providers as well for patients who truly require CTP. While application of CTP should be almost a last resort prior to amputation, too many providers have latched onto using these products far too soon, rather than adopting appropriate standard wound care...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
From: David Arlen, DPM, MPH
Upon my return from vacation, I was greatly saddened to learn of Dr. Helfand’s passing. I will always remember him fondly because he was my teacher, my residency director, my mentor, and he was a fellow promoter of Podiatric Public Health. While last week’s testimonials noted Dr. Helfand’s academic contributions, I would like to share three of his professional acts that showed he was a real mensch (a decent man) to his profession.
Art was the primary podiatrist to testify to the US Congress of the need to include podiatrists as “physicians” under the Medicare Act. His legislative success helped save countless diabetic feet and many lives throughout the years by allowing podiatrists to care for these patients under this new federal...
