PODIATRIC QUICK POLL
Where do you think you get most of your new patients from?

GA Podiatrist & Wife to Open Kids ‘R’ Kids Childcare Franchise
A local podiatrist and his wife are branching out and putting their best foot forward in the daycare industry. Sunny Patel, DPM and his wife Bijal have just broken ground on their Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Iron Bridge franchise. It’s the first location of the Georgia-based childcare chain in the Richmond region and will offer daycare and early education programming for children ages 6 weeks through 4 years old, along with before and after-school programming for children up to 12 years old.
Dr. Sunny Patel and his wife Bijal
With less on his plate than in past years of his career, Sunny said he wanted to pursue a new venture on the side with his wife, who is a stay-at-home mom to two young children. Dr. Patel said he and his wife saw gaps in the local market for childcare for their own children and decided last year to seize the opportunity. He said he feels the growing area is ripe for new daycare offerings.

LIFE BEYOND PODIATRY
Former OK Podiatrist is Award-Winning Writer, Actor, and Filmmaker
When Juliet Colyer, DPM left podiatry in 2023 due to health reasons, she had to focus on what she could still do instead of her physical limitations. An acting class quickly led to a role as a Christmas movie mom in 2025’s Spirit of Christmas Station (Nicely Entertainment), a villainous mother in Candy Jar’s You Once Called Me Wife (2025), and a co-star on FX’s The Lowdown, where she exchanged lines with Jeanne Tripplehorn. After launching her professional acting career, she wrote, directed, and starred in You Don’t Say, a short film which is nominated for four awards for the Independent Shorts Awards at the Regal LA Live Theater on September 19, 2026.
Dr. Juliet Colyer
The nominations are for Best First Time Director-Female (Juliet Colyer), Best Women's Short (You Don’t Say), Best Ensemble Cast (Ova Jean Seimens, Elizabeth Ann Townsend, Dodie Brown, Juliet Colyer, and Leesa Neidel), and Best Original Score (Daniel McIntyre). The 2026 Independent Shorts Awards features 71 films from 25 countries. Dr. Colyer’s next endeavor is executive producer and writer of Things I am Learning From Men which films in Oklahoma this fall.

Wedges Could Cause Problems for Your Feet: UK Podiatrist
Wedges have officially made a comeback, with the chunky shoes seen all over once again. But before you cop yourself a pair, or dust off that towering pair hiding at the back of your wardrobe, a leading podiatrist has warned that the height and design of some wedges could cause problems for your feet, joints, and even your balance. Dr. Helen Branthwaite, Chief Clinical Advisor at the Royal College of Podiatry, says wearing heels can have a noticeable impact on the way we walk.
Dr. Helen Branthwaite
"Wearing a heel in a shoe can change the way you move," she exclusively told Tyla. "Research has shown that a heel higher than 4cm in height significantly alters the pressure in the front of your foot and also impacts the movements in the ankle, knee, and hip, influencing strain on the back." And while it's probably better than a six-inch pair of Jimmy Choos, wedges aren't necessarily exempt from those health concerns. "A wedge shoe that goes beyond 1.5 inches could potentially change walking and make someone less stable in balance, especially if the shoe design includes a platform at the front of the shoe increasing overall height," the expert adds.

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY
Ways to Collect What's Due at the Time of Service
Front-end collections are rising while back-end recovery slides. These moves can get the balance paid while the patient is still there.
5. Think hard before you add a credit card surcharge
Passing processing fees to patients is legal in most states and increasingly common, but healthcare makes it messier than retail. Debit cards, health savings account cards, and flexible spending account cards cannot be surcharged. A few states ban the practice outright, others cap the fee at the actual processing cost, and payer contracts sometimes restrict what can be added to a patient's responsibility at all.
As a Medical Economics review of the rules notes, compliance is the practice's obligation and not the processor's, and a non-compliant program can cost more in penalties than it saves in fees. MGMA's advisers raise the other question worth asking: whether a 3% fee is worth losing the patient who walks over it. Practices that go ahead should disclose the fee on signage, on the invoice, and out loud.

FINANCIAL TIP OF THE DAY
What Income is Not Taxed by the IRS?
It might feel as if the IRS taxes most of your hard-earned money, but some types of income are non-taxable.
2. Are inheritances taxable income?
The IRS doesn't consider inheritances to be taxable income. That includes inheritances of cash, property, etc.
If the money you receive from an inheritance subsequently generates income, such as the earnings from an interest-bearing account, it might be taxable.
  • Additionally, although there is no federal inheritance tax, some states tax inheritances.
  • As of 2026, these states are Kentucky, Maryland, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
  • However, due to varying exemptions, few taxpayers pay state inheritance taxes overall.

Lost in Translation: How Language Gaps Undermine Patient Care
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
4. Language access isn’t just a legal box to check — it’s a cornerstone of equitable, compassionate healthcare. What I always come back to is this: if I, or someone I deeply cared about, were in a hospital in another country, I would want to understand what was happening. I would want to know what the doctors were saying, what decisions were being made, and what the plan was moving forward. That’s not just a desire — that’s a right.
In many cultures, doctors are held in high esteem. Patients don’t want to waste their time or ask for clarification. Sometimes a patient doesn't want to be a burden to the team. The interpreter device is right there. It just isn't used — simply because someone assumes that a nod means understanding. No one pauses to confirm that the patient truly grasps what is being explained.
