TX Podiatrist to Receive Clinical Excellence Award
Katherine M. Raspovic, DPM, of UT Southwestern Medical Center’s (UTSW) Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Plastic Surgery, has received the 2026 Patient and Family Recognition Award as part of the institution’s Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards. The honor recognizes clinical faculty whose compassionate and respectful delivery of exceptional care has earned the highest degree of trust and satisfaction from patients and their families. Selected from nearly 200 nominations across an institution comprising more than 3,200 faculty physicians and scientists, Dr. Raspovic’s recognition is an extraordinary achievement and a testament to her commitment to patient-centered care.
Dr. Katherine Raspovic
Established in 2018, the Leaders in Clinical Excellence Awards celebrate faculty members who strengthen patient care, educate the next generation of healthcare professionals, and advance UT Southwestern’s mission. Dr. Raspovic’s distinction is especially meaningful because it reflects the voices and experiences of the patients and families she serves, and it may represent a first for UTSW's Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and for a podiatrist faculty member of UTSW. She will be honored during a ceremony on November 4.

IA Podiatrist Grateful for Donated Procedure Chair
The Veterans Memorial Hospital (VMH) Podiatry Department has a new podiatry chair thanks to the generosity of donors supporting the Veterans Memorial Health Care Foundation with memorial donations. This new chair is used regularly for all podiatry patients during appointments with Kristina Thompson, DPM, and offers the patients and the provider a variety of advantages.
(L-R) Dr. Kristina Thompson; Pat Daigle, RN; and Kelsey Mucia, Infusion Coordinator.
“I am very grateful to the Foundation for providing our specialty clinic with a procedure chair. This chair has greatly benefited my patients by providing comfort while receiving podiatric care locally,” states Dr. Thompson. “We are able to use the procedure chair to perform numerous in-office procedures, from basic toenail cutting to minor surgical procedures to treating ingrown toenails and hammertoes.”

NY Podiatrist Participates in NY Fashion Week Preview Event
Samantha Landau, DPM, faculty at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University, brought her expertise in podiatric biomechanics and gait analysis to New York Fashion Week (NYFW) during a special preview event celebrating VIVAIA’s new FW26 campaign, featuring fashion icon Jenna Lyons and Emmy-nominated actress and comedian Meg Stalter.
Samantha Landau at NYFW
As part of the experience, Dr. Landau performed individualized biomechanical and gait evaluations, assessing factors such as foot structure, alignment, gait mechanics, and footwear needs. She then provided personalized shoe recommendations based on each participant’s biomechanics and lifestyle. For Dr. Landau, the NYFW preview provided an opportunity to bring evidence-based biomechanics into the fashion conversation, demonstrating how thoughtful footwear selection can support comfort, function, and healthy movement while still being fashionable.

Singapore Podiatrist Reveals Why Menopause is Wrecking Your Feet
Podiatrist Paul Macaulay explains how midlife hormonal shifts directly impact women's foot health. As estrogen levels drop during peri-menopause and menopause, tendons and ligaments stiffen, shifting body loads onto structures like the plantar fascia and Achilles tendon, which often leads to persistent pain and inflammation. This is frequently exacerbated by decades of wearing narrow footwear or choosing overly cushioned athletic shoes that lack stability. Because pregnancies and natural aging cause the foot's arch to flatten and splay, Macaulay highlights that "60% of my female patients are wearing the wrong size shoes but they basically have always worn small shoes because of fashion," says Macaulay.
Paul Macaulay
To mitigate foot pain and preserve long-term mobility, Macaulay recommends re-evaluating shoe sizes by taking out the shoe's insole, standing on it, and ensuring the foot does not spill over the edges while leaving a thumb's width of space in front of the toes. Rather than relying strictly on passive solutions like orthotics or soft foams, he emphasizes active strengthening through targeted exercises including tripod foot balance drills, single-leg calf raises, and gluteus medius training to prevent inward knee collapse. For daily footwear and dress shoes, he advises opting for structured styles with a wide forefeet, securing ankle straps, and a modest heel raise, which significantly reduces strain on the calves and arches.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Building a Birdhouse, Building a Surgeon
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
3. Know What You Need
Once my design was approved, I went into the garage to inventory what we already had—scrap wood, paint, tools—and made a list of what we still needed. I’ve realized I prep for surgery in a similar stepwise fashion. How will we start? What procedures are we performing, and how does each step affect the next? Do we need to contact a rep? Is there specific equipment required in the room? Thinking through the case sequentially before the day of surgery prevents unnecessary stress. Then, on surgery day, it becomes about setting the room up intentionally so everything flows the way it should. Knowing what you need ahead of time prevents scrambling when it matters most.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING CORNER) -PART 1A
From:  Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM

Don't jump the gun! This past weekend, I attended the 3-Day American College of Podiatric Physicians and Surgeons (ACPPS) twice-yearly conference. Dr. Michael G. Warshaw updated us on the ICD-10 coding changes for plantar fasciitis. He informed us that while they will be published on Oct 1, they will not go into effect until January 1, 2027.

Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL
RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CODING CORNER) - PART 1B
From: Robert Scott Steinberg, DPM
On October 1, 2026, plantar fasciitis gets its own ICD-10-CM codes for the first time:
M67.A01 — plantar fasciitis, right foot
M67.A02 — plantar fasciitis, left foot
M67.A09 — plantar fasciitis, unspecified foot
M72.2 is not deleted. It narrows to plantar fascial fibromatosis — Ledderhose disease — and subdivides by laterality: M72.21 right, M72.22 left. That distinction is the whole risk. A practice that keeps sending plantar fasciitis to M72.2 after October 1 is not using a retired code. It is submitting a different diagnosis. Ledderhose disease is a fibromatosis of the plantar fascia; plantar fasciitis is not. Expect denials, and expect them to be awkward to appeal, because the claim will say exactly what it says.
On timing: the FY2027 ICD-10-CM set applies to services provided October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. There is no January phase-in for ICD-10-CM. January 1 is the CPT and HCPCS cycle — an easy one to cross, and worth confirming with your own billing staff before assuming you have until winter.
Three things worth doing before October 1: Update the favorites list in your EHR. Tell whoever posts your charges that M72.2 is no longer the plantar fasciitis code. And confirm laterality is in the chart note, because M67.A09 will draw the same unspecified-code scrutiny every other unspecified code now draws.
