TX Podiatrist Explains the Benefits of Wearing Compression Socks
Whether you spend long days sitting at a desk, are taking a lengthy flight or, conversely, are on your feet for hours at a time, compression socks may help improve circulation and ease swelling, pain, and that heavy feeling in your legs. Inactivity, sitting or standing all day can cause blood pooling, which leads to swelling and an uncomfortable, heavy feeling in the legs, explains Anne Sharkey, DPM, a board-certified podiatrist based in Austin, Texas. Compression socks work “by applying external pressure to the lower legs,” which helps move blood back to the heart and reduces blood pooling in the legs, feet, and ankles, easing aches and fatigue.
Dr. Anne Sharkey
Compression socks can benefit people who spend long stretches sitting or standing, including passengers on long flights, flight attendants, nurses, and office workers, by helping improve circulation and reduce swelling and pain. They’re also commonly worn during pregnancy and postpartum to help with swelling. Athletes often use compression socks during or after workouts to support recovery and relieve muscle strain.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
AI Study Measures the AI Visibility Landscape for Podiatry
A recently published study by Javvo.ai sampled five U.S. metro markets covering 2,578 local podiatry practices, and analyzed 3,379 AI citations in response to 24 patient questions. The purpose of the study was to provide data and insights to podiatrists so they can make informed decisions about optimizing their practices for AI.
The study produced interesting findings, including:
  • Only 18% of local podiatry practices were ever mentioned in AI answers. The ones that get cited by AI are cited repeatedly.
  • Google ranking does not transfer to AI search. 43.6% of practices holding top-3 Google positions were never named when we asked AI the same question.
  • AI names the doctor more often than the practice in podiatry. 56% of AI citations name an individual podiatrist.
  • AI rarely considers social media posts or forum discussions when recommending a practice. They account for under 2% of the sources cited by AI.

SOLE PURPOSE BY SAVANNAH SANTIAGO, DPM
Building a Birdhouse, Building a Surgeon
Here are some valuable tips that have aided Savannah Santiago, DPM in navigating her experiences as a student and a resident:
5. Humility
Working with your hands has a way of teaching humility, patience, and respect for process. I may have grown up around power tools, but that didn’t make me immune to miscalculations or crooked angles. Experience helps—but it does not eliminate imperfection. The OR is no different. I can stand in a cadaver lab and land ten out of ten hammertoe K-wire throws on the first pass and then walk into the operating room and meet a toe that humbles me immediately.
Anatomy varies. Angles shift. Confidence meets reality. Preparation and contingency planning aren’t just about being thorough, they’re about acknowledging that you are human; that sometimes you will need a second pass; that sometimes things simply happen.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
RE: GLP-1 Medications and Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
The strongest data are for walking impairment from peripheral artery disease, plantar heel pain/plantar fasciitis, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic-foot complications. The most compelling gait-related evidence is the STRIDE trial, a 792-patient, phase 3b, randomized, double-blind trial published in The Lancet in 2025. Patients had type 2 diabetes plus symptomatic lower-extremity PAD with intermittent claudication. After 52 weeks, semaglutide 1 mg weekly significantly improved maximum walking distance versus placebo; the between-group improvement was about 26 meters, and pain-free walking distance and PAD-specific quality of life also improved. Importantly, the benefit occurred across BMI categories and glycemic-control levels, suggesting it was not simply because heavier patients lost weight. (ScienceDirect)
That is an important distinction: STRIDE didn't formally show a normalized "gait pattern," but it did show that patients with a lower-extremity vascular condition could walk farther before pain and walk farther overall after GLP-1 treatment. The 2026 ADA Standards now specifically discuss...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS) - PART 1A
RE: How the Media Perceives Podiatry
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
I received an email from Allen Jacobs shortly after Barry Block published my note concerning the automatic bunion corrector made famous by Dr. Blane Schilling. That’s the plastic gizmo with straps you wear for half an hour a day while relaxing and watching TV. You aren’t even required to be viewing a Lapiplasty procedure on social media while the Evelmont Bunion Fix does its own magic.
Allen told me in the email that he was suffering from dysphoria. He had decided to watch a couple of sitcoms earlier in the day and a topic on each of the shows was whether or not the cast viewed podiatrists as doctors. On the Golden Girls, one of the ladies mentioned that she was dating a doctor. When questioned what kind, the datee (sic) said she was seeing a podiatrist. The other three ladies ganged up on her, informing her that podiatrists are not real doctors.
The second dissipating incident involved the sitcom Seinfeld. The character Elaine told the usually taciturn group that she was dating a doctor, and when asked what kind of doctor, she replied, “a podiatrist.” The reaction did not quite measure up to the “Soup Nazi” episode, but the cast left no room for doubt that the podiatrist was not and never would be a doctor until he went to medical school. Elaine says podiatrists are real doctors and that is met with, “Anyone can get into podiatry school. George got into podiatry school.” Later, the podiatrist explains he went to podiatry school because he likes feet. Is that weird? The show has called the status of podiatry as a medical profession into question and becomes part of the joke and the...

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS) - PART 1B
From: Timothy Byron, DPM, MS
Thanks Dr. Tomczak for calling out the fraudsters! I am sure you have all seen the hucksters on Instagram and other platforms, stating verifiable untrue statements and selling flimflam devices to "correct" hallux abductovalgus and metatarsus adductus deformities with a splint they are selling. Now I am told by an ABFAS diplomate colleague that some insurance carriers require that these devices must be tried and fail before surgeries to actually correct the deformities are approved,
These fraudsters must be stopped by our legal team at APMA. This is false advertising and may be an insurance ploy to restrain our professional trade; not to mention keeping a patient seeking our care from suffering more time than needed.
Having practiced 50 years as a board certified foot surgeon, I have successfully accomplished thousands of these corrections and taught hundreds of podiatric surgical residents to do the same. We are allowing these people to undermine our long history of success in our field. I don't see this attack on any other surgical profession. We are "low hanging fruit, ripe for picking"! It is a national problem and it needs to be addressed with urgency!
