REMEMBERING 9/11 - PART 1

Editor’s note: On this, the 25-year anniversary of 9/11, we continue our proud tradition of publishing the following note from the editor, which was published in PM News on 9/12/01 and circulated via the Internet throughout the world.

It is just after 3 AM here in New York City and I simply can't sleep. Looking out the window of my bedroom on the 17th floor, there is an unobstructed view of the Manhattan skyline. I search again for the once familiar sight of the two tall white buildings that marked the lower end of the skyscraper-filled island. All I see are some eerie search lights of the rescue crews.

Like everyone else, I have been in shock all day, particularly since I witnessed in real-time the morbid views of the second plane hitting the World Trade Center and the sequential collapse of both towers.

World Trade Center 9/11/01

The gamut of emotions runs from shock, fear, sadness, to anger. Barely one half-century after the Holocaust, despite all our technological advances, man remains uncivilized. The realization sets in that the terrorists who committed this crime could have and still could set off a nuclear bomb, killing millions. The safety and security we have taken for granted in America is and will never be the same.

My phone has been ringing all day. Family and friends call to determine that everyone is safe. My mom calls to tell me my brother was scheduled to be at the WTC at 9 AM and was at the subway station when the first plane hit. Had the plane hit five minutes later, he would have been on an elevator headed for certain death.

Unfortunately, many thousands were not so lucky, including many employees of Blue Cross/Blue Shield, which only a few years ago moved from midtown to this location. There will be many tears shed as the names of those murdered in this horrific disaster become known, many unnecessary funerals to attend. So many innocent lives lost for no reason. So many families destroyed.

Later this morning, my wife and I will donate blood and attempt to do what we can in this time of crisis. We know the entire podiatric community will collectively pray for those affected by this catastrophe and provide whatever support is needed.

REMEMBERING 9/11 - PART 2
25 Year Anniversary 9-11 and Podiatry Volunteers at Saint Paul’s Chapel
Ben Pearl, DPM revisited St. Paul’s Chapel for the 25th anniversary of 9-11. He described his experience volunteering after 9-11 for a long weekend at St. Paul’s Chapel. The opportunity to plug in to something many people across the country wanted to do in some way was because of the legwork that was done by Nancy Clark, DPM and Arthur Gudeon, DPM of the New York College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Pearl describes it as the most memorable thing he has ever done in healthcare. Here is the narrative of his experience at Saint Paul’s Chapel.
A firefighter still grieving at St. Paul’s Chapel
Pearl was asked at the end of the shift if the reason he came was a calling by one of the protocol officers. The calling that he felt was real and he did it for people like his friend Jimmy, who walked down the stairs with haunting memories of firefighters coming up the stairs, who would never make it out, as well as those who never had the opportunity to escape: the fireman, police, and the victims.

Dr. Fournier's research compared barefoot running to running in a rocker-soled running shoe. RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: R. Alex Dellinger, DPM, Elliot Udell, DPM
Dr. Jacobs provided an excellent summary of some recent and exciting papers published on the potential benefits of GLP-1s and the lower extremity. This leads me to a question: if your office is like mine, you are starting to get reps peddling compounded injectable GLP-1s for us to prescribe to patients - how many are doing this? Is anyone actively prescribing/managing the commercially available drugs?
R. Alex Dellinger, DPM, Little Rock, AR
The data that Dr. Jacobs quoted showing that GLP-1 meds can help patients with plantar fasciitis, peripheral neuropathy, and gait-related disorders are compelling. The question I have for Dr. Jacobs and others is "at what point do podiatrists have a green light to prescribe GLP-1 drugs when dealing with pedal conditions where there is evidence that these drugs, independent of weight loss, would help these patients?"
Elliot Udell, DPM, Hicksville, NY

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRIC PRODUCTS IN THE NEWS
From: Stephen Peslar, BSc, DCh, CAPD
In the TV series The Practice, George Vogelman was an emotionally deeply disturbed podiatrist. He emailed Ellenor, a lawyer, and chatted with her for a few weeks, they finally meet for a date. He likes her. She doesn’t like his looks. She dumps him. He sues her for emotional distress. Then during a deposition, she says that she dumped him because she didn’t want to be the fat girl who ends up with the nerd with glasses. After a long discussion, Vogelman drops the suit against her.
Months later, Dr. Vogelman showed up at Ellenor’s office and claimed he was framed for murdering a young woman he met at a bar and had a one-night stand with her in a hotel room. Guess what he had in his medical bag? The young woman’s head. Ellenor believed him, defended him and he was found not guilty. At the end of season 3, he tried to kill Lindsay, a lawyer partner of Ellenor’s. Then in season 4, George (turns out to be a serial killer) tried to murder Ellenor but gets shot dead by Helen, another lawyer partner of Ellenor’s. It’s another sad media portrayal of a podiatrist. Why wasn’t the serial killer a gardener or an undertaker?

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
I met Bob during my residency at Kennedy Memorial Hospital WTD (now Jefferson) and later met his podiatrist father when I was looking for a practice to buy. Bob was a caring podiatrist, loved by his many patients, and an excellent singer with a great sense of humor. I visited his office many times during and after my residency, which was then a one-year program with plenty of surgical opportunity. The CBWO was the go-to procedure at that time (1983-4).
Bob retired after a serious health issue and blessed me by coming to my office with his lovely wife Naomi, for his foot care for several years. We shared plenty of life stories and laughter during those visits. Bob was a good friend and will be missed.
