NYCPM/Touro University Receives Biomechanics Donation

A generous grant for gait research and education in biomechanics was awarded to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) as part of Touro University. This gift was a contribution on behalf of a grateful, well-known celebrity patient whose decades-long struggle with lifestyle-limiting heel pain Joseph C. D’Amico, DPM, was able to resolve.

(L-R) Drs. Michael Trepal and Joseph D'Amico

Michael J. Trepal DPM, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean, said, “Thanks to Dr. Joseph D’Amico, this is the 14th year that we are honored to receive this substantial donation which, as in the past, will be used to foster, expand, and encourage research in our gait laboratory as well to again sponsor the widely acclaimed Richard O. Schuster, DPM Memorial Biomechanics Seminar to be held at the college on October 23rd and 25th.”

IL Podiatrist Cautions Against Walking Barefoot on Wooden Floors
This common habit is wrecking your feet; according to a podiatrist, it’s walking barefoot on wooden floors. It only makes sense that you’d want to kick off your shoes and cruise around your place barefoot, but Melissa Lockwood, DPM, suggests resisting this urge. “Walking barefoot on a wooden floor isn’t ideal because hardwood is a very hard, unforgiving surface that provides little cushioning or arch support,” she says. In fact, she likens this habit to walking barefoot on concrete.
Dr. Melissa Lockwood
“This can increase stress on the plantar fascia, joints, and soft tissues of the feet,” Dr. Lockwood tells Parade. A few things can happen if you walk barefoot on wooden floors regularly. One is that it may contribute to heel pain or even cause it, Dr. Lockwood says. You can develop arch fatigue too, which leads to a tired or achy feeling in the center of the foot, or metatarsalgia, a condition that leads to inflammation and achiness in the ball of your foot, per Dr. Lockwood.

PUBLISHED PODIATRISTS
Newly Published Review is Critical of Plantar Fascia Embolization for Plantar Fasciitis
An article recently published in the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association by Lee C. Rogers, DPM, David B. Alper, DPM, and Patrick A. DeHeer, DPM, reviewed the evidence basis for plantar fascia embolization (PFE). According to the article, the procedure has generated interest as a potential treatment for chronic plantar fasciitis, but the current evidence is insufficient to establish its efficacy, safety, or appropriate clinical role. Only four uncontrolled Class IV studies involving 132 patients have been published, with no randomized or controlled trials, and reported improvements cannot be reliably distinguished from the natural course of the condition, placebo effects, concurrent treatments, or regression to the mean.
Important limitations include inconsistent diagnostic and patient-selection criteria, inadequate biomechanical assessment, variable requirements for prior conservative care, non-standardized techniques, and limited long-term follow-up. The authors recommend that PFE should remain investigational and should not be routinely recommended outside carefully selected patients or research settings until rigorous comparative trials are completed.

THE ART OF PODIATRY
RE: Using Epinephrine for Digital Surgery
From: Allen M. Jacobs, DPM
I have performed forefoot and digital surgery for 50 years now. I have always routinely utilized epinephrine in my local anesthesia, that is, lidocaine with epinephrine. As I worked through school as an operating room retractor holder and scrub nurse, I noted that plastic surgeons made frequent use of epinephrine and their local anesthetics. However, I find that residents today have been told to never use epinephrine in the local anesthetic blocks.
I think this is a mistake. It is based upon a myth proven to be false. Early papers by Kaplan and Kashuk, and later by Richard Roth, demonstrated the efficacy and safety of epinephrine and forefoot surgery and digital surgery in particular.
When using epinephrine, judgment and respect are required. This is particularly true in the use of epinephrine for a digital blockade where you want to minimize the volume of anesthetic and inject gently. The benefits of epinephrine in local anesthesia are, in my opinion, arguable, contributing to patient comfort. There is a deeper, more profound anesthesia with the use of epinephrine. I find that the blocks are "more reliable" with the use of the epinephrine. Patients have less edema for obvious reasons. Patients have a prolonged anesthetic effect, far outlasting the expected duration of the local anesthetic such as lidocaine.
I think respect is the key. Minimize volume and minimize trauma. In an effort to minimize trauma and patient discomfort. I utilize a 27-gauge, 1.5 inch needle for all of the procedures I performed .

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS IN THE NEWS)
From: Jeffrey Trentalis, DPM
Having lived and practiced in Seattle, limiting the backpack weight to 10% of body weight is not feasible. When hikers go on overnight ventures, packs are usually 60-80 lbs. It’s important that hikers wear good supportive boots and orthotics, if necessary. Being prepared is most important when deep in NW mountains.

Dr. Tomczak writes, "Podiatrists do not have the luxury of entering a different specialty or practicing another branch of medicine to earn an income and pay back loans."
Need we say any more about why podiatry colleges are not filling their first-year classes?

OBITUARIES
RE: The Passing of Lawrence John "Larry" Newmann, DPM
Lawrence John “Larry” Newmann, 86, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 14, 2026, following a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. Larry earned his podiatric medical degree at the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. He also proudly served his country for two years in the United States Army.
Dr. Lawrence Newmann
Larry’s professional life was remarkable not only for its longevity, but also for how deeply he loved his work. He practiced podiatry for 60 years—two years in Chicago, followed by 58 years serving patients in Boca Raton. He discovered a second calling as a professor at Florida Atlantic University, where he taught for more than 20 years in the College of Business.
