HOSPITAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
USC Arcadia Hospital Grants H&P Privileges to Podiatrists
USC Arcadia Hospital grants H&P privileges to podiatrists. This is the third Keck Medicine of USC hospital where podiatrists now can perform history and physicals. What makes USC Arcadia stand out is that there will be amendments made to the medical staff bylaws.
Dr. Shelley Gath
Shelley Gath, DPM, CEO of Vantage Foot and Ankle Center and Podiatric Department Chair at USC Arcadia Hospital, said, "This is a historical time. For over 20 years, DPMs have been fighting for admitting privileges. We deserved it from the beginning, but I am glad we were able to overcome the barriers."

PODIATRISTS AND PODCASTS
Podiatrists Discuss Red S Syndrome
Savannah Santiago, DPM, and Ben Pearl, DPM, recently discussed Red S syndrome in athletes. Savannah, chief resident at St. Vincent Hospital in Indiana, described the circumstances that led to this medical condition which for many years was lesser known by coaches and physicians. Dr. Santiago said that a calorie deficit and over-training are two of the major factors which create this condition. Red S is more common in females but can also happen in males. She related that many coaches have misconceptions about what constitutes being too big, and that can have psychological ramifications on athletes. Click here to view short video clip.
Drs. Ben Pearl and Savannah Santiago
Dr. Pearl shared his experience as a high school cross-country runner when one of his teammates suffered from this condition while over-training. She did not look anorexic. She had shin splints and suffered an open fracture of her tibia during the last 15 meters of a cross-country race. Pearl decided that he would like to go into podiatry so that he could help prevent this type of medical tragedy from happening.

Retired Podiatrist Turns Memoir into Breast Cancer Fundraiser
He was mistaken for tennis player Andre Agassi in a Munich bar - and played along for an entire night of champagne. He nearly summited Mount Kilimanjaro, has flown on the Concorde, and lost a home to a wildfire. He built a surgical empire, lost everything, and rebuilt it from scratch. A self-described "shitty writer" with extraordinary stories, Herb Abbott, DPM, has touched, changed, and inspired thousands of lives across the country.
Dr. Herb Abbott
Whether you met him on vacation, knew him as a podiatric surgeon, or are reading this for the first time - one thing is for certain - there is nobody exactly like him. So, You Thought You Knew Me? is a memoir filled with 40 raw, funny, and unfiltered true stories. Dr. Abbott is donating the proceeds of his book to breast cancer research.

IN THE COURTS
Appellate Court Dismisses Malpractice Suit Against MA Podiatrist
The District Court/BMC Appellate Division has held that where a medical malpractice suit was dismissed, that decision should be upheld because of the plaintiff’s failure to post a bond as required by G. L. c. 231, §60B. "[The plaintiff] sued her podiatrist, [the defendant], for medical malpractice in the Waltham District Court. She alleged that [the defendant]’s negligent oversight of a resident doctor’s administration of a corticosteroid injection resulted in permanent numbness to her foot. After allowance of [the defendant]’s motion to transfer the case, a medical malpractice tribunal in the Middlesex Superior Court found that there was insufficient evidence to raise a legitimate question of liability.
Pursuant to G. L. c. 231, §60B, the Superior Court ordered [the plaintiff] to post a bond of $6,000 within thirty days and that, if she failed to do so, the action would be dismissed. The Superior Court transferred the action back to the District Court. At no time did [the plaintiff] post the required statutory bond. [The defendant] moved in the District Court to dismiss the complaint for the failure to post the bond, and after hearing, the motion was allowed and this appeal followed. We affirm." RE: Low Salary for Chair of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
Scholl College is offering a position as Chair of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery at the school with a range of $120,000 to $140,000 per annum. That computes to $60 to $70 per hour. I feel terrible and my dinner is fighting to stay down. I have to swallow faster than my gagging. (This job could put an end to the GLP-1 debate.)
Who can possibly afford to take such a position? You can't live downtown. Housing would cost more, and commuting from the suburbs would cost more than what they are offering. The Chair at Scholl can't afford to eat. Food stamps and government cheese? This is an embarrassing public advertisement. Does anyone think the students haven't seen this and will be wondering what kind of credentials the next Chair needs? What I've been preaching for a couple of years is coming to fruition. Maybe Rosalind Franklin University can buck up to double the salary for just one chair, medicine or surgery?
If a kid comes directly out of residency and is willing to take a pay cut, will there be loan forgiveness to become Chair? This could be a new low for podiatric administration. Plumbers, welders, and electricians are making this kind of money and have no loans to pay back.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NON-CLINICAL)
From: Bret M. Ribotsky, DPM
Sir William Osler's words, recently quoted in these pages, are eloquent. They do not describe the profession young clinicians are entering today. Offering them as guidance without acknowledging that gap does those clinicians no favors. Medicine was once practiced in an era with real financial upside. Training was affordable, reimbursement was fair, and a practitioner who worked hard and treated patients well could expect to prosper. It is easy to call medicine a calling rather than a business when the business side was kind to those who built careers in that era. That is not the reality facing today's graduates. A podiatrist today finishes school with $300,000+ in debt, then spends three years in residency on a stipend, while that debt accrues interest. What follows is a practice environment in which reimbursement has stagnated or fallen while overhead, malpractice premiums, EHR mandates, prior authorizations, audits, and compliance requirements keep rising. Much of the time once spent with patients now goes to paperwork demanded by payers and regulators.
The return on investment is also poor. Nurse practitioners and physician associates train for less time and at far lower cost, enter the workforce sooner, and in many settings earn as much as or more than a new podiatrist. Virtually every other medical specialty offers better reimbursement and a faster route to financial stability. Students who weigh those facts and choose another path are not abandoning the calling. They are doing arithmetic.
Telling young doctors to treat income as a "secondary consideration" is easy advice from those whose own financial security was never in doubt. Osler himself held distinguished, comfortably paid professorships. Nothing about his message required poverty. Podiatrists put patients first every day. If we want the profession to keep attracting capable, compassionate people, we must stop lecturing them about sacrifice and start fixing an economic model that punishes them for choosing it.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES)
Kevin B. Rosenbloom, CPed
I worked for Dr. Lowell Scott Weil, Sr. from 2003 to 2005, shortly after completing my pedorthic education at Northwestern. I arrived eager to learn. I left with an education that continues to shape my life. I have always described those years as a “PhD in life.” The practice he built showed me what was possible when medicine, business, and ambition came together. But his greatest influence on me was personal. I began by assisting the doctors, and he gave me increasing responsibility, eventually making me Director of Professional Relations. He trusted me with opportunities that required me to grow.
His standards were exceptionally high, and he was always teaching. He also connected me with Langer, where I learned about orthotic manufacturing, helping set me on the path toward building my own business. More than twenty years later, I still recognize his influence in how I think and work. He did not simply help me advance in a career. He expanded my understanding of what I could accomplish.
To Nancy, Lowell, and the entire Weil family, my deepest condolences. His legacy includes the people he taught and the work they continue to do because of him. There are mentors whose influence belongs to a chapter of your life, and others whose voice stays with you forever. Dr. Weil was the latter for me.
