IL Podiatrist Discusses the Biggest Financial Pressure Facing ASCs
For ASCs, staffing costs are not just about how many employees are on the payroll — they are about matching that payroll to a case volume that can change quickly throughout the year. Patrick McEneaney, DPM, owner and CEO of Crystal Lake-based Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, sees that balancing act as one of the biggest financial pressures heading into 2027. Staff too heavily during a slower stretch and labor costs climb; cut hours too aggressively and centers risk losing employees they will need when volume picks back up.
Dr. Patrick McEneaney
Ways to manage this include: 1. [Temporary employees] can be used during really busy times. Even though temps are more expensive, they don’t require a year-round commitment. 2. Hire part-time employees whom you can flex for more hours during busy times. 3. Re-evaluate the staffing needs. It is easy to staff based on what makes everyone comfortable, but you must always evaluate necessity. Can you cross-train staff to perform other responsibilities? 4. Outsource physical staff with virtual staff or AI.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (PODIATRISTS AND PODCASTS)
From: Rod Tomczak, DPM, MD, EdD
Dr. Santiago spoke about the RED-S syndrome which is not a Cold War secret but a systemic diagnosis and the results of overtraining which affects the whole body...not just a metatarsal stress fracture. For years, “sports medicine podiatrists” lived by the RICE acronym for just about everything related to getting hurt while involved in a pastime that keeps score. Golf to Rugby. Dr. Gabe Mirkin coined the acronym in his 1978 book ironically called The Sports Medicine Book. Mirkin, an MD, spent a lot of time devoted to foot and ankle pathology and therapies quite familiar to podiatry, such as orthotics and shoes.
This book led to the popular phenomena of a patient presenting to a podiatrist with a bag of orthotics and a bag of shoes and a chief complaint of a sore patella after running 130 miles per week. Even though he never really recommends podiatry, the mention of...

AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1A
From: Eric Thuen, DPM
As a close friend and practice partner of Bruce Lawrence, DPM, I am pleased to see Bruce and Janet receive recognition for their generosity to the field of podiatric medicine. Few are aware of the many causes and organizations they have supported from behind the scenes. Bruce has been a mentor to many and given countless hours to our profession, never seeking recognition for his efforts. Thank you, Bruce and Janet!

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (AT THE COLLEGES) - PART 1B
From: David S. Wolf, DPM
I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to my classmate and friend, Bruce Lawrence, DPM, and to his wife, Janet. Bruce and I graduated together from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in 1967. Over the many years since then, those of us in the ICPM Class of 1967 have watched with great pride as Bruce has continued to make meaningful contributions to our profession.
His legacy goes well beyond his remarkable philanthropy. Bruce’s creativity, including his work with podiatric surgical patents and innovations, has helped advance podiatric medicine. His guidance, leadership, and generous financial support of podiatric medical colleges and professional organizations, including the California Podiatric Medical Association, have also helped strengthen our profession for those who followed us.
Just as impressive is the fact that Bruce's and Janet’s generosity has never been limited to podiatry. Their support of education, medical research, shelters, community health programs, and those who might otherwise go without, speaks volumes about the kind of people they are. Professional achievements are important, but I have always believed that one of the true measures of a life is how many people are better off because of them. By that measure, Bruce has accomplished a great deal. The ICPM Class of 1967 has every reason to be proud to call Bruce Lawrence one of our own. I certainly am.
