UT Podiatrist Spotlights Foot Protection for Powersports Riders
Landon Cameron, DPM is highlighting a new statewide effort to get protective gear into the hands of powersports riders before they ever start the engine. The Gear Up and Go program was launched this month by Young Powersports, University of Utah Health, and Mountain America Credit Union. Dr. Cameron and Foot & Ankle Center are renewing their own message that proper footwear can help prevent a serious foot or ankle injury.
Dr. Landon Cameron
Dr. Cameron has practiced podiatry in Southern Utah and Nevada since 2016 and regularly treats foot and ankle injuries stemming from falls, crashes, and other high-impact accidents. "Proper footwear is one of the simplest ways for riders to lower their risk of a serious foot and ankle injury," said Dr. Cameron. "A well-fitted, over-the-ankle boot can make the difference between a sprain and a fracture when a rider goes down. Programs like Gear Up and Go make it easier to walk out with the right boots on day one instead of waiting until after a close call."

Extra Cushioning in Your Shoes Might Increase Stress on Your Feet: TX Podiatrist
The problem comes down to basic biomechanics, says Kenrick Dennis, DPM, a podiatrist in Houston who served as medical director for the Houston Marathon. “If you are standing on that marshmallow, it allows your foot to torque in and out a little bit more; the leg rotates to follow it, and that rotation is translated through the ankle, the knee, and the hip,” he says.
Dr. Kenrick Dennis
It takes a bit longer to sink into the cushiness and subconsciously find your balance before you push off again, similar to the extra effort required when walking on sand. The wobbliness, he says, plus the added height of max-cushion shoes, also increases the risk of twisting an ankle or falling. Moreover, max-cushion shoes diminish proprioception (awareness of where you are in space), since you have less sensory feedback of where you are vis-à-vis the ground.

INTERNATIONAL PODIATRY IN THE NEWS
Spanish Council of Podiatrists Defends Foot Health as a Universal Right
The president of the General Council of Official Colleges of Podiatrists of Spain (CGCOP), Elena Carrascosa, has emphasized that foot care must be understood as a basic right that transcends borders and cultural differences, reminding that "talking about foot health is talking about health and quality of life, regardless of the country, culture, or place."
Elena Carrascosa
She has stressed that our feet accompany us throughout our lives and allow us to move, work, relate, and maintain our autonomy, while specifying that the "challenge" of the profession "is not only to continue advancing scientifically and technically. We must also ensure that these advances translate into quality, safe, and increasingly accessible care for citizens," she pointed out.

RELEVANT RESEARCH
Ulcer Bed Biopsy Holds its Own vs. Bone Biopsy in Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis
A multicenter, double-blind randomized controlled trial published in Clinical Infectious Diseases (Lagrand, et al., March 2026) enrolled 84 adults with diabetic foot osteomyelitis (DFO). Every patient underwent both a percutaneous bone biopsy and an ulcer bed biopsy; participants were then randomized so their antibiotic regimen was guided by one culture or the other. Percutaneous bone biopsy has long been the reference standard, but ulcer bed biopsy is what many clinicians actually use. At twelve months, remission rates were 31.4% in the bone biopsy group (95% CI 18.1-48.7) and 39.4% in the ulcer bed biopsy group (95% CI 24.2-57.0).
Not superior, not inferior yielded the same clinical outcome from a less invasive procedure. This is a small trial, and the authors are honest about it. But the finding cuts against decades of guideline language and has generated an active correspondence in the Journal through July 2026. For clinicians who have been struggling to justify the logistics of routine bone biopsy in cases of DFO — and for patients who would rather not have one — this is the first randomized evidence that the simpler approach may be enough.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
RE: Verrucae Diagnosis and Treatment
From: Tim Byron, DPM, Poulsbo, WA
I read with interest a recent article regarding the diagnosis of verrucae, particularly because the diagnosis was made solely by clinical examination rather than a biopsy and pathology report. Throughout my career, I have taught hundreds of surgical residents a cardinal rule: never operate on a patient during the initial visit. Instead, our standard approach is to educate the patient on the condition, lay out a clear treatment plan, and schedule a follow-up visit. For suspicious or persistent lesions, that follow-up visit involves performing a biopsy under local anesthesia—curetting down from the stratum corneum to the stratum germinativum—and sending the specimen to a lab for a definitive cellular-level diagnosis.
Because this is a surgical procedure, proper post-operative care is essential. This includes explicit instructions, a post-operative shoe, and wound care to manage the void created by the space-occupying lesion (e.g., daily 4% chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG), followed by a bandage).
Mosaic warts, of course, present a different challenge. If a punch biopsy is feasible, it works well; otherwise, subdermal injections of bleomycin sulfate can be very effective. As a 10-year-old with a wart, I was treated with topical acids by my podiatrist—an agonizing process that kept me out of the pool all summer. I hated every minute of it and swore never to subject my own patients to the same ordeal.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (LETTERS TO LOCAL NEWSPAPERS)
RE: Let's Hear it for the Podiatrists
From: Robert Sage, DPM
Dear Editor of The CAP Times: The average person walks over 100,000 miles in their lifetime. Should you run into pain or problems with your body’s foundation, doctors of podiatric medicine (DPMs) like me are here to help. Podiatrists are the hidden gems of the healthcare system, and it is time to shine a light on their contributions in honor of International Podiatry Day.
More than 10% of Wisconsinites are diagnosed with diabetes, with many more undiagnosed and untreated. Podiatrists are essential to caring for complications arising from diabetes, including preventing foot issues that lead to amputations. Our state population is also getting older, with almost 50% more senior residents now than in 2010. These individuals are at higher risk for foot problems, and being unsteady on one’s feet is a leading cause of falls and death in older populations.
Podiatrists provide medical and surgical treatments to ensure older Wisconsinites can stay mobile and safe in their golden years. Without access to podiatric care, tragic health outcomes often multiply, while making the entire healthcare system more inefficient, ineffective, and costly. If you are experiencing problems with your feet, I encourage you (readers) to go to this site to find a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association practicing in your area. They will keep you on your feet or get you back on your feet.
