AT THE COLLEGES - PART 1
Quinnipiac and NYCPM Establish New Pathway to DPM Degree
Quinnipiac University and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine (NYCPM) at Touro University have entered into an agreement establishing a new pathway for qualified Quinnipiac graduates interested in pursuing a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree. Michael Trepal, DPM, dean and vice president for academic affairs at New York College of Podiatric Medicine at Touro University, said, “Our goal is to always ensure that Quinnipiac students have access to a high-quality, well-structured pathway into the podiatric profession."
Dr. Michael Trepal
The agreement creates a streamlined admissions pathway for Quinnipiac graduates who meet established academic and application requirements. Eligible students will receive preference in the NYCPM admissions process, along with additional opportunities to engage with the college and learn more about careers in podiatric medicine. Guaranteed scholarships will be provided to students who are accepted through this pathway.

Samuel Merritt University Receives $1 Million To Launch THRIVE Institute
Samuel Merritt University received $1 million in California state funding to establish the THRIVE Institute, which will train healthcare professionals to recognize and respond to human trafficking and violence. California state Senator Jesse Arreguín championed the funding. Since 2022, that program has trained nearly 700 current and future healthcare professionals.
Samuel Merritt University
The institute will establish a training academy where healthcare professionals can earn continuing education credits in trafficking response and trauma-informed care. It will also expand training for SMU students across campuses and academic disciplines. The university plans to evaluate its programs and publish curricula, assessment tools, and other materials that can be used by additional institutions.

CO Podiatrist Discusses How to Transition to Trail Running
Trail running... "It’s less repetitive on the body, so there tends to be less of an injury risk,” says Stefanie Flippin, DPM, a run coach with over 15 years of coaching experience, a foot and ankle surgeon, and a professional trail and ultra-runner for Lululemon based in Pine, Colorado. You have to “be more intentional” with trail running than road running, says Dr. Flippin. “You can’t just be daydreaming and looking out at the terrain, or else you might risk a fall.” Keep your focus several yards ahead to anticipate upcoming rocks or trees, and look down if you need to.
Dr. Stefanie Flippin
“New trail runners tend to struggle with descending on more technical trails because there’s a greater risk for falling,” says Dr. Flippin. “The natural inclination is to lean back and tense up the quads in order to brake.” The better option: Lean into the downhill and allow gravity to assist you. Before you hit the trails, run a downhill stretch on the road. “Practice picking up your pace and running a little bit quicker on a non-technical downhill first so that you’re reinforcing good mechanics,” says Dr. Flippin. “Then, start building in faster efforts on more technical downhill terrain.” Over time, you’ll build confidence—and speed. (On the flip side, if you need to slow down and hike an uphill climb, that’s part of trail running, too, and doesn’t make you any less of a runner, she adds.)

CA Podiatrist Presents Grand Rounds at Yale
Amol Saxena, DPM, MPH presented grand rounds for the Yale Podiatry Department last week on a 100-year history of treatments of Haglund’s syndrome.
Dr. Amol Saxena and Galen Rupp
In the grand rounds, Dr. Saxena discussed several treatments that have been used for “Haglund’s syndrome”, more appropriately termed Achilles insertional tendinopathy. He has been credited in several news sources over the years for performing successful surgery on Galen Rupp, who is still running 2:06 marathons at the age of 40. Runner’s World cited Dr. Saxena’s study on results of 166 Achilles insertional repairs from 2021, in which 96% of patients returned to their desired activity.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (CLINICAL)
From: Elliot Udell, DPM
When I first opened my practice over 35 years ago, a young girl came in with her mom. The teenager had warts on both feet. I was the eighth DPM to see her. She had maybe 20 mosaic verrucae on each foot. I tried the Sal acid first. Within two weeks, the number of verrucae tripled. From then on, we tried Cantharone, surgical removals with biopsy, and now I was dealing with maybe 200 warts on each foot. So I told the mother to see a dermatologist. She said, "We did and he sent her back to you."
It was in May and the girl wanted to go to camp, but with 200 warts in each foot, they would not hold a spot for her. I am not making this up: The girl was in tears. I told her to close her eyes every night and meditate and pray that they go away. In two weeks, all of the warts were gone! PS: Sal acid is still my first choice, and to date, I have never recommended meditation for warts, even though some of the literature says it can work.
